The impact of the AI boom on Apple extends well beyond software development and rising component costs. It could fundamentally reshape the company’s Apple silicon roadmap too.
According to Bloomberg, AI is having an increasing influence on Apple’s chip development strategy, beginning with the upcoming M6 generation. Apple typically introduces a base M-series chip before following up with more powerful Pro, Max, and Ultra variants over the subsequent months. However, the company is reportedly considering a different approach for the M6 series.
Instead of completing the M6 family with the M6 Pro and M6 Max, word on the street is that Apple will jump straight to the M7 chip in the first half of 2027. The M7 Pro and M7 Max are then expected to arrive towards the end of the year, followed by an M7 Ultra in 2028. The latest rumours also say the M7 Ultra could support as much as 1.5TB of memory.
