Instagram AI: Opt out of using your posts

Even so, the decision to make this an opt-out feature is likely to leave some users uneasy – it certainly did for me. Posting a photo publicly on Instagram does not necessarily mean someone expects it to be fed into an AI image tool, particularly when the resulting image may look quite different from the original post. The fact that Instagram does not notify users when their content has been used also makes the feature feel less transparent than it should be.

There is another limitation worth noting. Turning the setting off will stop people from using your posts and Reels for future AI creations, but it will not remove images that have already been generated. Changing an account from public to private works in much the same way: it prevents future use, but does not undo what has already happened.

I can’t stress enough why this sucks and why you should turn it off.

To turn it off:

• Open the Instagram app and tap your profile
• Tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner
• Scroll down and select Sharing and reuse
• Look for Allow people to use your content on Instagram and with AI features on Meta
• Switch off both Posts and Reels.

The wording may not appear for every account yet, as Meta appears to be rolling the feature out gradually. It is still worth checking the setting, especially for users with public accounts who would rather not have their Instagram content turned into raw material for someone else’s AI prompt.
