Atlus’ upcoming Persona 4 Revival might make some changes to previous releases of the classic RPG after all. The remake of the original 2008 title Persona 4 at first seemed to be a pretty faithful recreation of the beloved 2012 Golden release of the game. Slowly, small changes have appeared as Atlus releases new details, with the latest potential change centered around the appearance of a single outfit.
In the lead up to Revival‘s 2027 release, Atlus has been posting screenshots and information on social media. One such post from June 29 on X (formerly Twitter) re-introduces players to the idol Rise Kujikawa. The post contains three screenshots. The first is a great piece of splash art for Rise and the second shows the social link screen. It is the third and final photo, however, that is of interest. In it, Rise wears a cute pink outfit on a stage and strikes a pose. In the top right we can see the date is Oct. 30. In Persona 4, that date coincides with a beauty pageant event. Except the outfit in question does not appear in Persona 4‘s original or Golden release.
Fans were quick to point out that this outfit isn’t new to the extended Persona 4 series, and that it comes from 2015 rhythm spinoff title Persona 4: Dancing All Night. Some fans suggest that this could just mean Dancing All Night outfits will be available as optional costumes, something Atlus has included in several of its RPGs. Others point out that this occurs during a cutscene in a known event from the main game, suggesting instead that this marks a slight canon change from previous versions.
The beauty pageant occurs in two segments, casual wear and swimsuit. It is possible that the Dancing All Night outfit replaces the original outfit in one of these phases. Whether the casual wear or swimsuit section will be altered is the subject of much debate between fans. Replacing casual wear with the more interesting Dancing All Night outfits could make that phase less boring. Removing the swimsuit section entirely, on the other hand, from a pageant full of high school girls could be a welcome update that aims to acknowledge some of the original title’s outdated elements. The entire beauty pageant has a few “comedic” moments that aren’t likely to age well, including a section where the male cast take part.
Based on what Atlus has shown off so far, it does seem that no major content from the original or Golden versions of Persona 4 is being removed in Revival. The official announcement trailer included the appearance of Marie, a Golden-exclusive character. Whatever the logic behind the change to Rise’s outfit in the beauty pageant, it seems more like an adjustment and update to an event rather than a complete removal.
Persona 4 Revival will launch on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X on Feb. 18, 2027.
