In a time of rising living costs and rapidly ageing populations in countries such China, Korea, and Singapore, a worrying pattern has emerged in Japan in recent years, drawing concern from many.Â
A growing number of elderly women have been convicted of minor theft, often involving shoplifting food from supermarkets.
According to reports, a large share of elderly female inmates are in prison for theft, and the number of women aged over 65 behind bars has increased significantly over the past two decades.
Perhaps the most sobering part of it all is that some of these elderly women are believed to have resorted to theft with the very intention of being caught and sent to prison.
Experts have said that the trend is linked to issues such as poverty, isolation, and gaps in the social safety net.
For repeat offenders, prison can offer what life outside often cannot, including regular meals, shelter, medical care, and social interaction. Some inmates have even reportedly said they feel more secure in prison than outside.Â
