A major technical glitch in Malaysia on May 28 caused the immigration systems, autogates, and facial recognition systems to crash from 4:30am to 9:30am. Thousands of people were stuck in long queues at both land checkpoints in Johor, as it was “peak time” for Malaysians rushing to Singapore for work. Additional security personnel were deployed to maintain order. Immigration officers had to clear locals and foreigners manually during that period. The Star reported that the Malaysian Immigration Systems (MyIMMs) data centre, a 30-year-old system, had issues, and the problem was not due to a hack. The last time something similar occurred was on Apr. 23. A new immigration system, the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) is expected to replace MyIMMs by 2028.
