Classic Scarface Video Game from 2006 Could Be Making a Comeback

2006’s Scarface: The World Is Yours could be making its way onto modern platforms, perhaps through a re-release, remaster, or even a remake. Speculation about this modest mid-2000s success has been swirling since what appears to be an accidental early release on certain digital storefronts. But this potential Scarface: The World Is Yours reprisal raises a lot of questions.

Scarface: The World Is Yours launched to a generally favorable reception, with critics of the time appraising it kindly. More than this, the Scarface adaptation and quasi-sequel nurtured something of a cult following in the years following its release, and is now viewed by many as a time capsule of mid-2000s gaming, when licensed adaptations lined the shelves. All in all, the Montana-helmed crime sandbox game is markedly different from what gamers of today are familiar with, which is what makes its resurfacing on Steam and the Epic Games Store all the more notable.

Scarface: The World Is Yours Appears On Steam, Epic Games Store

As spotted by PC Gamer, Scarface: The World Is Yours recently appeared on both Steam and the Epic Games Store as an upcoming release, though without a specific launch date. The Steam page describes it as a “re-release of the original classic third-person open-world action game.” It also states that this version will have an “optional HD graphics mode (DLC)” and that it will allow players to “experience Tony Montana’s explosive comeback in sharper detail than ever before.” The description goes on to say that the HD graphics mode is subject to change, and that “further details will be announced at a later time.”

Of course, this isn’t so unusual—video game re-releases are a common occurrence—but there are several unexpected details that make this potential Scarface: The World Is Yours comeback more puzzling than expected. For one thing, the Steam and EGS pages in question label the game’s publisher as EC Digital, a company with no prior releases, or footprint of any kind in the games industry. EC Digital itself made a statement on Steam following the surprise appearance of The World Is Yours, claiming that a “technical issue” caused the game to go live on storefronts earlier than intended. The statement does little to illuminate the nature of the project itself, although it does make mention of third parties and “partners” involved in the alleged re-release.

Until more information comes to light, it’s hard to make heads or tails of this unexpected Scarface: The World Is Yours revival. The mystery surrounding EC Digital, which was only deepened by its opaque Steam statement, is the most confusing element in all of this: if EC Digital is proven to be a real, officially sanctioned entity, that may help determine the truth behind the Scarface project.
