Hanwei, as per quotes published in AsiaOne, said he had suspected he was adopted earlier in his twenties after a mysterious phone call from an unidentified woman.

At the time he didn’t press the issue strongly with his parents because he felt it “didn’t matter”. However, as rumours of his parentage spread over the years, his mother eventually admitted, when he was 40, that the actor had indeed been adopted.

“My mum cried as she told me I was adopted,” Hanwei was quoted by AsiaOne as saying.

Hanwei recalled that his mum was worried he would reject her after knowing the truth. “I told her even if my birth parents come for me one day, I would greet them politely but my adoptive parents are the most important people in my life.”

Hanwei’s mum died aged 90 in 2024.
