PS5 price increase in Singapore and Southeast Asia

Closer to home, Sony Interactive Entertainment Southeast Asia has announced in their latest blog post of the new localised pricings that will be effective starting 1 May, 2026. If you’ve been pondering about purchasing one, you have less than three days before the new price kicks in.

That increase for the PS5 Pro is probably the one that sticks, because at that price you’re starting to think about what kind of PC components you could piece together.

What’s odd is that this is happening at all. Consoles are supposed to get cheaper over time. From the PlayStation One to the PS4, that’s always been the business case – launch high, then slowly ease down as the price for components drop. The PS5 is however, doing quiote the opposite, and this isn’t even the first time. Sony already nudged prices up not too long ago, and now here we are again.

The explanation isn’t surprising, though. Memory prices are climbing, and a lot of that has to do with AI. Big tech firms are hoovering up DRAM and storage for data centres, and that naturally pushes costs up everywhere else. Throw in the usual supply chain headaches, and suddenly making consoles isn’t as cheap as it used to be.

Still, it does put Sony in a slightly awkward spot. The PS5 isn’t new anymore. We’re well past the early adopter phase, and this is usually when momentum either holds steady or starts tapering off. Sony’s own recent numbers already hint at softer sales, so raising prices now feels like a bit of a gamble.
