Sony hikes PS5 prices again, citing increase in component costs

What’s odd is that this is happening at all. Consoles are supposed to get cheaper over time. From the PlayStation One to the PS4, that’s always been the business case – launch high, then slowly ease down as the price for components drop. The PS5 is however, doing quiote the opposite, and this isn’t even the first time. Sony already nudged prices up not too long ago, and now here we are again.

The explanation isn’t surprising, though. Memory prices are climbing, and a lot of that has to do with AI. Big tech firms are hoovering up DRAM and storage for data centres, and that naturally pushes costs up everywhere else. Throw in the usual supply chain headaches, and suddenly making consoles isn’t as cheap as it used to be.

Still, it does put Sony in a slightly awkward spot. The PS5 isn’t new anymore. We’re well past the early adopter phase, and this is usually when momentum either holds steady or starts tapering off. Sony’s own recent numbers already hint at softer sales, so raising prices now feels like a bit of a gamble.

Closer to home, it’s not clear yet if Southeast Asia – including Singapore – will see the same adjustments. But you can bet this will have an impact here sooner than later. I’ve reached out to PlayStation Southeast Asia for clarification and will update this story once there’s a response.
