Who is the New Lady Whistledown? Bridgerton Cast Reveals Their Prime Suspects

“There’s quite a few characters who I think it could be. We all came up with quite different names when we were chatting about it. But I don’t want to know. So I’m trying not to give it too much thought. So I really want that moment, that payoff.”

While the cast of Bridgerton has a lineup of suspects for the new Lady Whistledown, there’s one person who knows the character’s identity for sure: Showrunner Jess Brownell. Brownell says that, even though the new mystery was a surprise reveal, it’s been in the works since 2024 and has been definitively planned out.

“[Lady Whistledown’s identity] has been decided,” Brownell says. [Executive Producer] Shonda [Rhimes] and I had a big conversation all the way back in Season 3 when we were [discussing] ‘What are we doing with Whistledown?’ Knowing that Penelope is coming out publicly. We knew we couldn’t sustain that for too long, that there weren’t as many stakes and there wasn’t as much drama in that. So we thought, ‘Well, what will we do afterwards?’ And we went, ‘OK, Whistledown will come back.’ And then we developed our suspect.”

A second Lady Whistledown is a dramatic departure from the show’s source text: Julia Quinn’s series of novels. But Brownell says that’s a small price to pay if it means Julie Andrews can continue on the show.

“It’s a departure from the books,” Brownell says. “But the voice of Whistledown and specifically the voice of Julie Andrews has become such a hallmark of the show. It’s not only part of the style of the show, but it’s also thematically really useful for us. The way that Lady Whistledown can provide a bit of conflict is really important. Now that Penelope has gone through an evolution in her character and is a better person, she’s a less incendiary Whisteldown. It makes sense for the character to move on to something else. And now we can have someone come in and stoke the fire a little bit more.”
