Prime Video’s Invincible Series Is in the Endgame Now, as Lee Pace’s Thragg Debuts in Season 4

A combination of superior genetics and an obsessive focus on training and self-improvement have molded Thragg into the ultimate warrior. He has all the powers of men like Mark and Nolan, just amplified to the Nth degree. His strength is practically immeasurable. His lifespan is vastly enhanced. And he has all the other perks of Viltrumite genetics, like flight, invulnerability, and advanced healing. His reign over Viltrum is absolute because no other Viltrumite can hope to challenge him in battle.

In terms of temperament, Thragg is a bit different from his minions. He’s not as overtly bloodthirsty as someone like Conquest, and he’s even shown a habit of granting second chances to valuable soldiers who fail him. But make no mistake – Thragg is the single biggest threat to all life in the galaxy. He won’t rest until the Viltrum Empire is the only power left standing.

“There is a lot of big stuff in Invincible, and it’s an escalating show,” Kirkman said at the NYCC panel. “We’re trying to make every season of the show better than the one before it, and Conquest is going to be extremely hard to top. I think we all agree. The way that we’re going to top that very much involves this character Thragg, who is just a monumental addition to the show, who is going to change everything you think you know about the Invincible universe.”

“I feel like he’s a pretty cool customer,” Pace said. “He knows how powerful he is, and he’s patient. He’s got a plan. But there’s a rage inside him that is violent in a way only Invincible can be. Watching the show, you understand that this a tone like nothing else. I love that we can go from Burger Mart to the most insane parts of the galaxy within seconds.”

Thragg in Invincible Season 4 and Beyond

Again, with Thragg entering the stage in Season 4, the Invincible series is entering the endgame. That’s not to say that the series will actually be ending with Season 4. Prime Video recently renewed the show for a fifth season, after all. But with Thragg’s debut, the last major piece of the puzzle is falling into place. The true conflict of the series can begin.

Up till now, Mark was given a choice. He could either continue his father’s mission of preparing Earth to be conquered by the Viltrumites (thereby at least ensuring a semi-peaceful transition), or he could stand and fight (inviting untold chaos and bloodshed). By defeating Conquest, Mark has chosen the second option. Now, Thragg can’t help but take notice of this rebellious half-human/half-Viltrumite hero.

Every conflict in Invincible from this point to the end of the series boils down to Mark’s struggle to mount an effective resistance against Thragg and the Viltrumites. That involves not just relying on his fellow Earth-based heroes, but looking to the growing resistance elsewhere in the galaxy. This is where Earth starts to become part of a bigger movement to finally end the scourge of the Viltrumites.

Again, it’s not as if the series will suddenly reach its climax now that Thragg is in the picture, or that Mark will only have to worry about Thragg going forward. You can also expect Anissa to play an increased role in the series going forward (though we’ll see how and if the show adapts a certain controversial twist from the comic). Fans can also look forward to a truly epic and lengthy battle between Thragg and one of Earth’s other powerful metahumans. We won’t spoil that match-up here.

The idea is more that Thragg’s debut will bring a newfound sense of momentum to the show. This is the true enemy Mark has been preparing to confront since the day he first put on a mask, whether he realizes it or not. Even Conquest was just an appetizer before the main course. With Thragg in the picture, Mark will find himself tested in ways he couldn’t have imagined. More than ever, he faces the need to grow stronger or watch his home perish.
