Voters in Myanmar cast their ballots this morning on Dec. 28, the first time since the military coup in 2021 that sparked a civil war across the country. Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, which won by a landslide in the last election in 2020, is not taking part, reported AFP. The party was dissolved in 2023 after refusing to register under the new military rules. Other opposition parties also refused to register or declined to run under the conditions set by the junta, deeming them unfair. These parties have called for a voter boycott.
