Local supermarket chain Sheng Siong has been known to be generous in showing appreciation to their staff. Recently, the company has reportedly been awarding employees that have worked at least five years with pure gold coins, emblazoned with the Sheng Siong logo, as a Long Service Award. The award has four different tiers for each five year milestone, and the longer an employee has served, the higher the weight and value of the gold they receive, according to sources cited by 8world. Sheng Siong awarded 20g gold coins worth S$3,700 for five years of service, 30g gold coins worth S$5,600 for 10 years, and 40g gold coins worth S$7,500 for 15 years, 8world reported. The grand prize is a 100g gold coin worth S$18,600, given to those who have worked at Sheng Siong for 20 years. A photo of the 100g gold coin originally shared on Facebook on Dec. 21 showed that the back of the coin was inscribed with the words, “20 Years Long Service Award”. On Dec. 20, photos of the 20g gold coins were also shared on Xiaohongshu by two separate users, who said they have been in the company for five years. The photos showed the employees receiving certificates of appreciation along with the gold coins from Sheng Siong CEO Lim Hock Chee at a special ceremony. Both wrote that the time flew by fast, while one added that they were grateful for the growth he experienced at Sheng Siong, and looked forward to keep improving in the next five years. One of these users told 8world he worked at the pork aisle of the supermarket. The other shared, in response to a comment on his post, that he was a junior supervisor. Many in the comments praised Sheng Siong’s generosity, and some jokingly asked if the company was still hiring. Mothership has reached out to Sheng Siong for comment. It was reported in April that Lim earned S$7.06 million in the financial year of 2024 as Sheng Siong’s CEO, 20.6 per cent more than the year before. At the end of October, Sheng Siong shared that its net profit for the third quarter of 2025 increased by 12 per cent to S$43.8 million. Its revenue rose 14.4 per cent year on year to S$415.5 million, driven by new store openings and an improvement in comparable same store sales.
