The Sydney fruit shop owner who gained worldwide admiration for disarming a gunman in Bondi Beach is recovering from bullet wounds to his arm and hand. His first surgery was successful, and an online fundraiser set up in his name has raised over USS1 million in donations. Australian police says that civilian intervention helped prevent further loss of life. New South Wales Premier Chris Minn visited him in hospital and said: “Ahmed is a real-life hero. Last night, his incredible bravery no doubt saved countless lives when he disarmed a terrorist at enormous personal risk.” According to reports, Ahmed moved to Australia in 2006 from Syria.
