First launched in July this year elsewhere, the Edifier MR5 has made its way to our sunny shores. These basic studio monitor speakers have levelled up in several ways, which we’ll touch on below.

Like its past versions, the Edifier MR5 is designed with accurate sound reproduction in mind and has a neutral (flat) frequency response for its tuning. This makes it very targeted at folks who need neutral sounds for music production, video editing, or just about anyone who prefers having a neutral soundstage. Per its spec sheet, the MR5 claims to have a range of 46Hz to 40,000Hz (40kHz).

However, this version is bigger than its predecessor, because it now comes with three drivers (one for trebles, mids, and bass), for better separation and clarity. The previous MR4 was a dual-driver speaker with one driver handling the mid and low frequencies.
The Edifier MR5 features a stereo setup (one tri-driver setup per speaker side), consisting of a 21W RMS Class-D driver for trebles, a 15W driver for mids, and a 30W driver for bass. These drivers can support signal conversion, amplification, and accuracy of up to 24-bit/96kHz.
Wired audio inputs are plenty and mostly versatile for both casual and professional setups. There’s a balanced XLR connection, another for 1/4-inch TRS, one unbalanced RCA, and a 3.5mm audio jack input.
For wireless audio, it uses Bluetooth 6.0, covering the standard, lossy codec (SBC) and a higher-res LDAC (990Kbps) one. A big draw of Bluetooth 6.0 is multipoint connectivity, allowing you to connect two source devices and switch seamlessly between them.

Also, the speakers are compatible with Edifier’s ConneX app (Android, iOS), which offers more granular control for acoustic tuning to help compensate based on your room layout and size.
Edifier claims its total 110W output and 101dB sound pressure (loudness) is “room-filling”, making these speakers ideal for “medium-sized” rooms. In our interpretation, it sounds suitable for dedicated desktop spaces, such as studios or a home office. Just be mindful of where you place them, as the Edifier MR5 has a net weight of 10.38kg.
