A leak has revealed that a brand-new Dead Rising game is on the way, and could be taking a trip to Hollywood with the series’ first protagonist, Frank West. If true, it would be the first new mainline Dead Rising game since 2016’s Dead Rising 4, which was met with middling reviews and poor sales.
Although a remaster of the original Dead Rising was released last year, the series has largely been on hiatus for almost a decade now. Despite this, rumors of a Dead Rising reboot first surfaced in 2023, but little came of them until now. Many assumed that Dead Rising was dead and buried, but Capcom as a publisher has never been afraid to revisit popular franchises and bring them back to life after long breaks. The 12-year gap between Dragon’s Dogma and its 2024 sequel is just one recent example of this, and considering how successful Dead Rising once was, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Capcom give it another shot.

Dead Rising Could Be Headed To Hollywood
According to a new report from MP1st, a new Dead Rising game is currently in the works at Capcom. Not a remaster or remake like last year’s entry, but a full new mainline game featuring Dead Rising 1 and 4 protagonist Frank West. The report claims the game is codenamed Rec, and may be a direct sequel to the first game in the series. How it connects to Dead Rising 4 is unknown. MP1st also says that Frank’s return also brings with it his iconic camera for taking pictures, a series staple at this point.
The good news is that Frank will have plenty to take pictures of, because MP1st’s report claims that the new Dead Rising game will be set in Hollywood. More specifically, an enclosed movie studio lot, where an “extravagant and deranged film director” forces the protagonist to take part in trials, which will aid the director in filming a movie. If correct, the report suggests that this title will make great use of its Hollywood setting, with Dead Rising survivors appearing in the form of actors who are hiding away following the zombie outbreak. The mechanic of rescuing survivors is another Dead Rising staple, so it’s good to hear that it’s planned for a return here.
All in all, it seems the game is well-placed to embrace the series’ identity. MP1st also believes that Dead Rising Psychopaths will make a return as “minions sent by the director.” An interesting detail raised by the report is that Frank saves one of the director’s key minions early in the game, who is then “tasked with filming everything while having a bomb strapped to his body.” Dead Rising doesn’t need to reinvent the wheel in order to be a success. Long-time fans of the series just want more of the wacky tone that the earlier games set, and if Capcom can deliver that, then it’s an exciting prospect. However, fans shouldn’t expect the new Dead Rising to release any time soon – MP1st describes it as being “still a considerable distance away.”
Assuming the Hollywood movie lot setting is correct, it would be right in line with the series’ history. The first game was set in a Dawn of the Dead-style shopping mall, while the sequel featured a similar environment. However, Dead Rising 3 and 4 took a much more open-world approach, which wasn’t massively popular with fans. The idea of an enclosed movie set really sounds like a return to the series’ roots of smaller spaces with more detail. This would also allow for the return of Dead Rising‘s staple time limit mechanic, which MP1st claims this upcoming game plans to feature.
