Death Stranding is Getting an Anime Series

Death Stranding is getting an anime series, as revealed by Hideo Kojima and Disney. This is just the latest of the Death Stranding spin-offs that have been announced in recent history.

Death Stranding has presented players with an unusual post-apocalyptic world to explore, and these new adaptations will help to further flesh out the world and its inhabitants. Previously, it was announced that Death Stranding would get a movie adaptation, plus an animated feature. While those projects are still in the works, it seems the Kojima Productions universe isn’t slowing down its expansion.

During the Disney APAC Showcase, Disney announced a new anime series called Death Stranding Isolations would be exclusively streaming on Disney+, starting in 2027. Not much has been revealed about the overall plot yet, but it has been confirmed that the series will take place in the same world that players explored as Sam Bridges.

According to Deadline, the anime will follow Bridges, plus other characters who are trying to navigate the isolated world. One is described as an old man trying to “realize salvation,” while a female warrior is trying to create a world of constant conflict. A boy and a girl will also be featured, with the boy having some kind of grudge against Norman Reedus’ character, while the girl is trying to accept her own loneliness.

In terms of production, the series will be animated by E&H Production, a Japanese animation studio founded in 2021, led by former MAPPA and Jujutsu Kaisen director Sunghoo Park. Takayuki Sano, who is a key animator who previously worked on anime like Attack on Titan and Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, will direct the series, while Hideo Kojima is signed on as executive producer. Though it’s a Japanese anime, director Sano noted that the team wants it to be a global animation project, with global talent to match. While a key art promotional image from the series was shown, it’s noted that the title is still subject to change.

As mentioned, this isn’t the only spin-off of Death Stranding in the works. If all goes according to plan, 2027 will also see the release of a live-action Death Stranding film from A24. So far, the other animation project, Death Stranding: Mosquito, doesn’t have an announced release window. However, it did receive a short teaser trailer, so it’s possible that it may reach fans before the other two projects are completed.
