We were all broke together, eating $3.50 cai fan at the hawker center, drinking Teh Peng, and complaining about life. But once you start working, your social circle starts shaping your financial future way more than you think.
I had a group of secondary school friends I kept in touch with for years. Every time we met up, it was the exact same story: endless complaining about their boss, blaming the government, talking about how the “system is rigged,” and complaining about having no money. But here’s the kicker—every weekend they wanted to go to high-end bars, spend $200 per night on alcohol, buy branded stuff on installment plans, or try to get-rich-quick through dodgy high-leverage crypto trades or online gambling.
Whenever anyone in the group tried to upskill, take on a side hustle, or save money, they would pull them down: “Wah, play big shot ah?” or “Don’t so try-hard lah, life short just enjoy.”

That’s the classic crab mentality. Losers don’t just stay broke; they subconsciously drag everyone around them down to their level so they don’t feel bad about their own lack of effort.

It took me a while to realize: Negative mindset and bad financial habits are contagious.
If your core circle consists of people who:
1. Have zero financial discipline and spend beyond their means just to show off on IG.
2. Blame everyone else for their situation instead of taking ownership.
3. Encourage bad habits (gambling, excessive drinking, consumer debt).
4. Get jealous or sarcastic when you achieve success.

…You WILL eventually adopt their mindset or bleed money trying to fit in with them.
Cutting off old friends is hard, especially in a small place like SG where everyone knows everyone. But you don’t even need a dramatic fight. Just slow-fade. Spend less time with people who drain your energy and bank account, and invest more time in friends who challenge you to grow, share actual practical advice, and cheer for your progress.
Protect your environment, protect your mental peace, and protect your wallet. You are the average of the five people you hang out with most. Choose carefully.

Source

Just wanted to write a quick rant/reminder here because I see so many young Singaporeans falling into this trap. When we were in school or…

[2

post-98353","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-buzz-news-sg-global","wpcat-2-id
["GET
