The sequel to 2023’s instant classic Godzilla Minus One, Minus Zero reunites director Takashi Yamazaki and his cast for a new adventure featuring the Big G. The film is entering its opening weekend with strong reviews, including a 7/10 from IGN’s Scott Collura, who wrote that it “doesn’t disappoint in the slightest on the kaiju front.” Still, now that we’ve seen the film, we have some questions about certain plot elements and a potential third installment in the series. Let’s get into all the spoilery details of Godzilla Minus Zero.

<output class="box-wrapper jsx-2673806401" data-cy="article-video"/>

Godzilla Minus Zero Ending Explained

We have a lot to get through, so we’ll keep the recap part brief. As indicated by the marketing, Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe return as Kōichi and Noriko Shikishima (they got married between films), who rejoin the civilian effort to protect postwar Japan from giant monsters, aka kaiju, while raising their adopted daughter Akiko (Sae Nagatani). It’s now 1949 and the kaiju in question is King Ghidorah, an alien dragon who crashes on Earth inside a meteorite, and the plan is to use Noriko, who’s been infused with Godzilla cells from her encounter with the big guy in the last film, as bait to lure Godzilla into a fight with Ghidorah. While the ensuing battle (seemingly?) kills Ghidorah, it results in the death of Dr. Kenji Noda (Hidetaka Yoshioka), one of Kōichi’s allies from the first film, and also renders the Shikishima family fugitives from the occupying US military, who want to use Noriko’s Godzilla-summoning abilities as a weapon.

More Minus Zero

There’s more to the movie’s story, such as meteorologist Makoto Aoyama (Masami Nagasawa), who uses her weather predicting powers to help the good guys (more useful than you might think), and Min Tanaka as Professor Murakami, an elderly biologist who builds the device Noriko uses to attract Godzilla’s attention. We’ll talk more about them in a bit. Overall, Minus Zero is a satisfying blockbuster for its kaiju action and endearing characters, and looks incredible on an IMAX screen. However, it’s not as tidy as the previous film, with a few things that left us scratching our heads once the credits started rolling. Namely…

<output class="box-wrapper jsx-2673806401" data-cy="article-slideshow">

Godzilla Minus Zero Images

</output>

Did King Ghidorah Really Die?

Let it not be said that Godzilla Minus Zero is lacking in spectacle, because the final showdown between Godzilla and King Ghidorah is one for the ages. However, the resolution is a bit strange because we’re not sure what happened to Ghidorah. The battle ends with the two monsters firing their energy beams at each other, and Godzilla’s seems to overpower his foe’s. But we don’t actually see Ghidorah’s fate. The edit here is weird, with Ghidorah just kind of disappearing between cuts; we don’t see a body, nor does he seem to explode into bits. So what happened? We know Ghidorah has incredible regenerative abilities, with him even being infected with Godzilla cells in the final fight (he starts growing Godzilla style dorsal fins while using his beam). Could Ghidorah have survived to menace the world anew? Or did Godzilla’s archenemy actually perish? It’s not quite clear, so we’d like to know!

<output class="box-wrapper jsx-2673806401">

</output>

Why Did Professor Murakami Give Up on His Revenge?

Professor Murakami is a new character in Godzilla Minus Zero, and one of the first people to witness and survive Ghidorah’s wrath. A biologist by trade, Murakami has cell samples of both Godzilla and Ghidorah, and also developed a machine that broadcasts a creature’s “resonance frequency” to draw more members of the same species to its location. Hooking Noriko up to the machine is what lets the heroes lure Godzilla to Ghidorah for the final battle. But Murakami has another use of the device: to get revenge for the death of his family in the bombing of Hiroshima. Halfway through the film, Murakami fantasizes about summoning Godzilla to New York City, where he annihilates Manhattan with an atomic blast. It’s an incredible scene, and paints what could be a fascinating direction for the movie to go… except it doesn’t.

<output class="box-wrapper jsx-2673806401">

Professor Murakami (Min Tanaka)

</output>

Murakami decides against revenge during the finale, and while Dr. Noda does go to him the night before and pleads for Murakami to give up on his vengeful crusade – Noda insists that “ending the cycle” of violence would be the true way to avenge his family – was that really enough to convince him? It feels like there’s a beat or two missing, some additional motivation for Murakami to change his path and destroy the device after Ghidorah’s defeat. The movie ends with Murakami as a prisoner of the US military, and he says there are “more minds to change.” Perhaps Murakami’s story will continue and we’ll get more light on his mindset if there’s a sequel.

Does Doctor Aoyuma Have Magic Powers?

This might seem like an odd question, but walk with me here. Makoto Aoyuma is a meteorologist who joins Dr. Noda’s Disaster Response Bureau, and her weather prediction abilities are surprisingly helpful in developing plans to counteract Ghidorah. She’s the one who suggests using lightning rods dropped from a bomber plane to strike Ghidorah down, and also uses storm patterns to track his movements so the Shikishimas can lure Godzilla to the right spot. That said, this is the 1940s, where weather prediction was much harder to do than it is now due to the limits of the era’s technology. There was even another movie this year, Pressure, a WWII drama about the meteorologists who helped plan the Normandy invasion, which showed how challenging forecasting the weather was at that time (it’s also a pretty good movie if you’re curious). But Aoyuma has an uncanny knack for it.

The only time where she claims she’s failed with weather prediction in the past wasn’t even her fault. She got the forecast right, but people above her didn’t listen. There are even multiple scenes where Aoyuma sticks her head out into the air and seems to “sense” incoming weather like she’s a Jedi using the Force. So is Aoyuma just incredibly gifted in this field, or does she have some supernatural talent? The movie doesn’t say, but since there are psychics and fairies in other Godzilla movies, it wouldn’t be unprecedented.

<output class="box-wrapper jsx-2673806401" data-cy="article-video"/>

Was Ghidorah’s Arrival on Earth a Coincidence?

To go back to other precedents in the Godzilla series, although the Minus films are more “realistic” than other interpretations, King Ghidorah is once again an alien in Godzilla Minus Zero. The perennial Godzilla nemesis is usually (but not always) from outer space and often works on behalf of invaders intent on conquering the world. While Ghidorah rides in on a meteorite, there’s no evidence in Minus Zero that it was purposefully sent to Earth by anyone. An invasion by Xiliens may be too pulpy for the tone of Yamazaki’s films, but Ghidorah just showing up only a couple of years after Godzilla and also just so happening to crash-land specifically in Japan is a remarkable set of circumstances. Is there more to Ghidorah’s arrival that we don’t yet know? Maybe this will be explored in another film if Ghidorah did indeed survive.

Why Was Noriko the Only Survivor of Godzilla Cell Infection?

As revealed at the end of Godzilla Minus One, Noriko was infected with Godzilla cells, which gave her enough regenerative ability to survive her injuries in that film. The infection expresses itself in Minus Zero as a discoloration of one eye and a patch of spikes on her right shoulder, which Noriko covers with an eye patch and bandage respectively. We later learn that Noriko was one of a handful of people infected with Godzilla cells, which initially results in a healing factor but then develops into mass mutations which can kill the host. In fact, Noriko is apparently the only person left with Godzilla cells who’s been able to survive long-term. So what makes Noriko so special? Is it just an unknown quirk of biology, or is there a greater explanation that Professor Murakami didn’t have time to study? Since Noriko is the only person who can power the “summon Godzilla” machine, we’d like to know more about how the infection works.

<output class="box-wrapper jsx-2673806401">

Noriko (Minami Hamabe)

</output>

Will There Be a Sequel to Godzilla Minus Zero?

This is the big one. After two Godzilla films, Yamazaki has established himself as one of the best directors to ever tackle the big guy, but will there be a third entry in the series? Yamazaki has said he’s “fifty-fifty” on coming back for another film, so it’s not a guarantee. That said, Minus Zero ends on a note that could be developed down the line: the Shikishimas on the run from the US military, who want Noriko back so they can use Godzilla as a weapon. The thematic throughline of Minus Zero – that it is possible to sacrifice too much for the sake of an abstract “greater good” – is paid off by Kōichi and Noriko changing their minds about leaving Akiko at an orphanage for her safety and instead taking her with them to keep the family together, so it’s still a satisfying ending to this story. But with them riding off into the sunset, we can’t help but wonder: how far will the occupiers go to get Noriko back? Is there another adventure in showing the Shikishimas as fugitives staying one step ahead of a colonizing force who want to turn a country’s greatest trauma against the rest of the world?

A sequel to Minus Zero (Godzilla Plus One?) would also give an opportunity to dig deeper into the other threads we’ve discussed. What does Yamazaki’s version of post-war Japan look like in the 1950s? Are there other monsters from the Godzilla franchise that could be revamped in this style? Could a third movie be even louder in IMAX? Honestly, Godzilla is an endless well for potential reinvention, so we hope to see many more movies about him in the years to come.

What were your biggest questions coming out of Godzilla Minus Zero?
