Your companions get legitimately attached to you \u2014 or not; your dating life can complicate your mission; and innocuous decisions you make in hour one can affect the sweeping political options available to you in the series\u2019 biggest moments. Whether you seek more of that exact mix of party banter, branching loyalty quests, and a world that remembers you, or <\/em>you\u2019re intrigued by the same bones in a different skin \u2014 sci-fi crew instead of fantasy party, perhaps \u2014 here are 9 games to add to your queue.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: The cast of well-written characters and intricate combat system (along with Larian Studios\u2019 whimsical charm)<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X<\/p>\n Although Divinity: Original Sin<\/em> and its sequel are set 1,000 years apart, in both, you\u2019re protecting your fantasy world, Rivellon, from a magical energy (Source) and monsters emanating from the series\u2019 overarching Void. But, luckily, you\u2019re not tackling that alone. Each game gives you the opportunity to gather a party of intrepid explorers to save the world, but, more importantly, bicker constantly as you do.<\/p>\n This dynamic within Divinity: Original Sin<\/em> and especially <\/em>Divinity: Original Sin 2<\/em> makes the characters the true reason for replay after replay. Sure, you\u2019re solving a murder mystery in Divinity: Original Sin<\/em> and escaping imprisonment, then surviving the wilds in Divinity: Original Sin 2<\/em> \u2014 but those are details. Wait until you meet Sebille. You\u2019ll either be best friends or unable to stand each other immediately<\/em>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: It\u2019s a 2002 game that helped form today\u2019s RPG genre of real-feeling companions and branching questlines<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Windows PC, Xbox Series X<\/p>\n Before Dragon Age, there was Neverwinter Nights<\/em> \u2014 a fellow BioWare title that paved the way straight to Dragon Age. <\/em>At the start of the game, a fatal plague called the Wailing Death (chill; normal) is striking the city of Neverwinter. You\u2019re in quarantine, but you still need to graduate from the Neverwinter Academy and figure out how to help Lady Aribeth create a cure for the plague. People are panicking. There are riots to navigate. Everything\u2019s absolute chaos behind the city\u2019s closed walls.<\/p>\n Since Neverwinter Nights <\/em>is nearly a 25-year-old-game, some parts of it are harder to love than others, but it\u2019s worth a play for Dragon Age players seeking a nostalgic title.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: It\u2019s got similar-feeling companion depth and combat primed for a party tactician<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: Windows PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, Switch<\/p>\n In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader<\/em> by Owlcat Games, you\u2019re exploring uncharted space\u2026specifically, the Koronus Expanse. But while the setting differs from mostly land-based Dragon Age, <\/em>the problems your characters face are similar. Here, you\u2019re navigating a succession crisis and working to claim your place within the Von Valancius family. Much like Dragon Age<\/em>\u2019s Blight and Darkspawn, Rogue Trader <\/em>has its share of existential corruption for you to weather (here, it\u2019s Chaos and Warp mutations) while you also<\/em> have to deal with the possibility of much more immediate betrayal.<\/p>\n Dragon Age<\/em> players will recognize Rogue Trader<\/em>\u2019s starting class and character background system \u2013 will you be a Warrior who was a military officer, or a priest-turned-Operative? \u2013 but the turn-based combat will be a change of pace.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: Everywhere you turn, there are fiendishly difficult narrative choices. Buckle up<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: PS4, PS5, Switch, Windows PC, Xbox Series X<\/p>\n Welcome to Baldur\u2019s Gate 2<\/em> \u2014 surprise, you\u2019re trapped in an underground laboratory. You\u2019re Gorion\u2019s Ward, a Bhaalspawn (e.g., kid of the murder god Bhaal). There\u2019s a devilish wizard, Jon Irenicus, who\u2019s torturing you \u2013 ahem, conducting tests to study your essence. You need to escape, rescue your also-trapped childhood friend Imoen, and then rest and recover\u2026as long as nothing happens to interfere with that plan, of course.<\/p>\n In Baldur\u2019s Gate 2, <\/em>as in the Dragon Age <\/em>series, you\u2019re learning about the world around you and figuring out who you can trust or recruit to help you accomplish a goal that\u2019s both very personal and potentially world-ending. But here, there are vampires.<\/p>\n Baldur\u2019s Gate 2<\/em> is another BioWare title from before the company moved away from D&D, so the two games also share developer DNA. (As a bonus, if you\u2019re a Dragon Age <\/em>person and you\u2019ve not played Baldur\u2019s Gate 3<\/em>\u2026please do.)<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: It\u2019s got the same BioWare choice-and-companion architecture. Just swap your sword for an assault rifle<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X<\/p>\n Mass Effect and Dragon Age <\/em>are both BioWare RPG franchises with relationship building, storytelling, and party- or squad-based tactics. In each, your choices shape the narrative. In each, you can use save data from one game to influence the next. In each, you have a base \u2014 a camp or a spaceship \u2014 where you can regroup with your companions.<\/p>\n But that\u2019s where the similarities end. In Mass Effect<\/em>, you start as newcomer Commander Shepard aboard an advanced starship. You\u2019re working to investigate a beacon on a human colony world\u2026until things may or may not very suddenly take a turn for the worse (brace for attack!). But at least you\u2019re fighting alongside friends. Getting to hang with the sullen, sarcastic Garrus Vakarian might be one of the greatest joys in the series.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: It\u2019s got party-based tactics and <\/em>large-scale kingdom management.<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X<\/p>\n If the political games you could play within Dragon Age: Origins <\/em>were the draw for you, Pathfinder: Kingmaker <\/em>has that in spades. With even more management systems layered on top. Here, you start the game as a group of adventurers gathered by one Lady Jamandi Alordi. You\u2019re going to the Stolen Lands to bring back the head of the Stag Lord. If you do, you get to found your own barony. If not\u2026well, let\u2019s not contemplate that alternative, shall we?<\/p>\n While this game isn\u2019t just routine kingdom management \u2013 there are mysterious fey threats and an ancient curse getting in the way of your day-to-day \u2013 steering Pathfinder: Kingmaker\u2019<\/em>s plot via being a decent lord to your barony is a big focus in this game. But, if you\u2019re looking for explicitly similar structure to feel anchored here, Dragon Age: Origins<\/em> players rejoice: the combat is real-time-with-pause, which should feel just like home.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: It\u2019s got grudge-holding factions, possibly-loyal companions, within a Colonial-era setting replete with political intrigue.<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X<\/p>\n Less polish, smaller budget, rougher edges, but a lot of the same charm \u2013 GreedFall<\/em> feels like Dragon Age <\/em>in that, here, you\u2019ve got real-time combat, a world where your choices matter, and the ability to deeply bond (or not) with your companions. In GreedFall<\/em>, though, instead of battling the Blight, you\u2019re working to save the old continent from a plague, the Malichor. Your character is a Legate tasked with traveling to an island untouched by the plague to discover the cure, but you\u2019re not the only one with that idea. As multiple<\/em> colonial factions \u2013 including the religious nation Th\u00e9l\u00e8me and the fond-of-science Bridge Alliance \u2013 fight over the island, your job is simple: Protect the island, search for the plague\u2019s cure, and fend off political disaster. That does<\/em> sound simple, right?<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Why you\u2019ll like this if you like Dragon Age<\/strong>: It\u2019s a crunchier, more tactical game: Think Dragon Age<\/em> run through a true Dungeons & Dragons <\/em>ruleset.<\/p>\n Where to play<\/strong>: PS5, Windows PC, Xbox Series X<\/p>\n As Solasta: Crown of the Magister <\/em>begins, your party of four is called upon to investigate the Badlands \u2013 a land infested with monsters, but you\u2019re prepared for that, right? You do find the titular Crown of the Magister along the way, an artifact that might just be able to help you save your world.<\/p>\n Dragon Age <\/em>players who loved the series\u2019 focus on deep character writing may find Solasta <\/em>a bit lacking. Solasta<\/em>\u2019s focus is not on story. Instead, you\u2019re managing turn-based combat, organizing inventories, and figuring out how to use your class abilities to their greatest effect.<\/p>\n To the \u201cless of a story\u201d point, though, Solasta<\/em>\u2019s sequel is in development.
