Before the question ended, she was already agreeing. Hand a grieving husband his wife’s body? Or keep her for research that might save more lives down the line? Someone was going to pay for whichever answer I chose. (I knew Shepard would say yes. I also knew, thumbs hovering over the controller, that every part of me wished she wouldn’t.)

Back on the Citadel, after Tali joined the crew, Samesh Bhatia found us at the Presidium and apologized for the intrusion before he asked for anything. Samesh is a civilian, the husband of a marine, with no rank, no pull, and, by his own telling, nowhere else to turn. His wife, Nirali, was a marine in the 212. She died on Eden Prime, the colony where Shepard’s first mission in Mass Effect went hunting for a Prothean beacon and found the geth instead, attacking on orders of Saren Arterius, a rogue spectre operative. We found Ashley Williams there, at the dig site where her team had been posted, the last of her squad standing. Nirali didn’t make it off the planet, and the Alliance had refused to release her body. Samesh wanted to cremate her and give her a proper funeral. Ashley, who was in my squad on this run through Legendary Edition, had served in Nirali’s unit, which put two survivors of dead units on the Presidium, listening to a man who lost the one who didn’t make it.

Bosker — the clerk holding the case — waited in an embassy lounge. Nirali’s wounds didn’t match any weapon the Alliance had seen, he said, and so few bodies were intact enough to study that every sample counted. Shepard heard what survivors hear: If one body could buy a better defense against the geth, then maybe that person’s death doesn’t have to be wasted. A Sole Survivor needs to believe this more than anything.

I made the case to Samesh, and he said yes. He asked the Alliance to run its tests so that others would be spared the loss he feels, and he thanked us for finding him answers. A grieving husband thanked me for keeping his wife’s body. I took that as proof I’d done right.

Then nothing happened. The quest log closed, Samesh and Bosker disappeared from the Citadel, and that was Nirali Bhatia’s farewell: a marine who died protecting a colony, filed under “completed.” A soldier had given everything on Eden Prime and would give a little more, so the Alliance could understand the geth sooner and maybe keep the next marine off the same table. That was the trade I told myself was fair. Samesh gave up his goodbye for it.

I thought I had done right, until I played out the other ending. This time, I leaned on Bosker instead, and he gave me a line I’d missed the first time: “Commander, you of all people should understand how far we go to protect humanity.” Shepard can answer, here, that none of that matters if we lose our humanity along the way.

<picture>
        </picture>Image: BioWare

And in that second playthrough, Shep (and I) realized something: Part of that, part of protecting our humanity, is protecting our right to ritual and our ability to say goodbye. Holding back the one body that might have kept other marines alive may have been the practical call, but Shepard had already watched 50 marines turn into easily forgotten numbers. This time, it was very clear that the most important thing to do was honor Nirali’s sacrifice by giving her rest, not a final mission. Bosker folded and released the body. I went back to deliver the news, still unsure if I’d made a better decision this time.

That uncertainty evaporated the second Samesh spoke. He said that saying goodbye would not bring him happiness, but it could bring him peace. Ashley told him that Nirali had loved him, that she’d missed his cooking, that she’d played recordings of him every night before bed. Hearing this, something in Shepard’s rule loosened.

In Mass Effect 2, if you let Samesh bury Nirali, you get an email. In it, Samesh thanks Shepard and tells her he’d opened the restaurant Nirali had planned, with free meals for Alliance personnel. In my first save, that restaurant never opened. In this one, it did. Maybe the dead have to count for something, and maybe sometimes that something is a husband who gets to be at peace — and a marine whose legacy counted most by going home.

                    Special Issue

   It’s N7 Day.
