She hadn’t paid the electricity bill.

Oops.

The 57-year-old host recently recalled the rather embarrassing incident, which happened after she moved to Singapore in 2024 with her son, Li Wu, 17, who attends an international school here.

Matilda, who also enrolled in the Chinese EMBA programme at the National University of Singapore (NUS) earlier this year, admitted that settling into life here wasn’t quite as straightforward as she’d expected.

Especially when it came to paying the bills.

“When we first got [to Singapore], I was confused about a lot of things. I was thinking: ‘Why does it feel like I never paid the electricity bills?'” she laughed.

As Matilda and her husband, Taiwanese actor Li Liren, took turns travelling to Singapore to accompany their son, she eventually returned to Taiwan while Liren stayed here.

Their daughter, 19-year-old Lilian, is currently studying in the US.

Unfortunately, it was during Liren’s stay that the unpaid electricity bill finally caught up with the family.

And let’s just say, he got quite the surprise.

“When I got home after school, I opened the door and saw my father lying on the sofa,” said Li Wu. “I asked him what he was doing, and he replied: ‘Your mother didn’t pay the electricity bill’.”

Yes, Dad was apparently left sitting at home without electricity because Mum hadn’t settled the bill.

And with no power at home, Liren and Li Wu eventually had to check into a hotel.

Talk about an unexpected staycation.

Recalling the incident in an interview with zaobao.sg, Matilda found the whole situation “really hilarious”.

“I kept looking for the bill but couldn’t find it, and I didn’t know how to pay it. I didn’t expect the electricity to be cut off just like that,” she said.

Thankfully, a helpful neighbour eventually came to the family’s rescue.

After learning that their electricity had been cut off, the neighbour paid the outstanding bill on Matilda’s behalf.

She subsequently transferred the money back to them.

Well, that’s one neighbour you’d definitely want to have around.

And it seems Matilda won’t have to worry about another electricity bill mishap involving her son anytime soon.

She joked that Li Wu has since moved into a hostel, so paying the household electricity bills is no longer something she needs to worry about.

As for Matilda, she continues to split her time between Taiwan and Singapore, returning here for two weeks every other month to attend her EMBA classes.

Perhaps someone should show her how to set up automatic bill payments, just in case.

Imagine living in a foreign country and suddenly having the electricity cut off at home.
