Singapore isn’t exactly short of Android-based tablets. Between established brands such as Samsung and Lenovo, and countless budget alternatives available, there’s already plenty of choice for anyone who doesn’t want to spend iPad money.

But local brand Lumos believes there’s still room for another player, particularly one offering affordable hardware backed by a familiar Singapore name and local customer support.

Better known for its home cinema projectors and, more recently, the Evoke digital camera, Lumos has expanded its product portfolio with four Android tablets aimed at students, working adults and families. Prices start from S$139 for the Kids Tablet, with the newly launched 12-inch Tablet Ultra sitting at the top of the range for S$449.

For Lumos co-founder Zac Tan, the move into tablets is part of a bigger plan to make the company more than a projector brand.

“We started with projectors and developed expertise in creating affordable, well-built lifestyle electronics that customers love,” Tan told HardwareZone, “This led us to look at how we could bring this same value to the main aspects of Singaporeans’ lifestyles, namely entertainment, work & play, and travel.”

Projectors handle home entertainment, cameras capture memories, and tablets bridge the gap between work, study and entertainment.

It’s a straightforward enough strategy. The harder part is convincing buyers that Lumos has something worth offering in a market already full of Android devices.

Rather than relying on a single do-everything model, Lumos is offering four tablets covering different budgets and usage requirements.

Here’s how the lineup compares:

Model

Price

Specs

Lumos Tablet

S$149.00 (RRP S$499.00)

10.1-inch 1920 x 800 display, Wi-fi 6, 4GB + 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, Android 14, SD card slot

Lumos Tablet Pro

S$269.00 (RRP S$549.00)

10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 display, Wi-fi 6, dual 4G SIM, 6GB + 12GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, Android 15, SD card slot

Lumos Tablet Ultra

S$449.00 (RRP S$898.00)

12-inch 2000 x 1200 display, Wi-fi 6, dual 4G SIM, 8GB + 24GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, Android 16, SD card slot

Lumos Kids Tablet

S$139.00 (RRP S$299.00)

7-inch 1024 x 600, Wi-fi 6, BlueTooth 5.2, 3GB + 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, Android 15, SD Card Slot

The Tablet Ultra is the most capable model in the range. It features a 12-inch IPS display with a 2000 x 1200 resolution, 256GB of storage, dual 4G connectivity and an 8,000mAh battery with quick charging support.

Those needing mobile connectivity have the Tablet Pro. It comes with a 10.1-inch FHD display and supports dual 4G SIM cards, making it more suitable for working or studying away from home.

The entry-level Lumos Tablet is designed for casual use, including watching videos, browsing websites, reading and handling simple productivity tasks.

Rounding out the lineup is the Kids Tablet, which targets children aged three to nine. It comes with a simplified interface, parental controls, kids specific apps, and a drop-resistant protective frame with an integrated carry handle.

Note that, according to the product specifications, each tablet comes with both physical and virtual memory.

For example, the Ultra runs Android 16 and has 32GB of RAM. However, this is made up of 8GB of physical memory and 24GB of additional virtual memory, rather than 32GB of physical RAM. While this helps with memory management and keeping background apps running, it doesn’t offer the same performance as 32GB of actual RAM. For everyday tasks such as streaming, browsing and light productivity, though, 8GB should be more than adequate.

Lumos also offers optional accessory bundles starting priced from S$25 for a cover to S$79 for a case, keyboard, mouse and stylus. This allows the three main tablets to double as lightweight productivity devices for school assignments, presentations and basic office work.

Of course, adding a keyboard doesn’t automatically make an Android tablet a laptop replacement. Much will depend on the applications being used, the processor’s performance and how comfortably the hardware handles multitasking.

Why Lumos believes cheaper is better

!["The]("https://cassette.sphdigital.com.sg/image/hardwarezone/404d17728011215bdbc3e653d94deb111a8d160aa89992574f1fdf1ff1224c59?w=660&q=85")

For Tan, affordability is about deciding which features consumers need rather than competing with the specifications of more expensive products.

“Many premium electronics come with expensive features, extravagant designs and advanced specifications that everyday consumers rarely need, yet still pay for,” he explained.

Instead, Lumos concentrates on performance, build quality, ease of use and features relevant to everyday activities.

The company believes this approach allows it to keep prices down without making buyers pay for premium extras, such as advanced camera systems or specialised sensors that see limited use on tablets.

Still, Lumos faces an obvious challenge. Affordable Android tablets are already widely available, and low prices alone won’t guarantee a good experience. Buyers will also want to know how smoothly their favourite apps run, how long the battery lasts and whether the software will continue receiving updates.

Tan acknowledged the competition but believes Lumos’ established reputation and Singapore-based support give it an advantage.

“Our focus is on everyday Singaporeans, from students and working adults to families, who want a well-built tablet at an affordable price.”

He added that the company’s size gives it the flexibility to respond quickly to customer feedback and adjust products according to local preferences.

Designed in Singapore, manufactured with partners

!["The]("https://cassette.sphdigital.com.sg/image/hardwarezone/a0d26e04f1abce46a407523d89569058e60d6bc59410a4ca1d0781bc215601a6?w=660&q=85")

With Lumos now selling projectors, cameras, tablets and karaoke equipment, one question is how much of the technology the company develops itself.

Tan explained that Lumos works with external manufacturing partners rather than building every component or product entirely in-house.

“Every LUMOS product is defined in Singapore, from the specifications and features we choose to how the software is configured.”

According to Tan, Lumos works with experienced manufacturers and customises products to meet its requirements. This approach helps the company concentrate on the features and pricing it believes customers value most.

It also means Lumos is entering markets where established competitors already have extensive research and development capabilities, larger product portfolios and longer software support histories.

For buyers, an important consideration is what happens after the purchase.

Lumos says every tablet comes with a one-year local warranty, with support provided by its in-house Singapore team. The company also offers out-of-warranty servicing.

Tan sees local after-sales service as an important distinction from cheaper alternatives sold through overseas marketplaces, where obtaining repairs or replacement parts is sometimes less straightforward.

Lumos has not specified a guaranteed number of Android version upgrades or years of security patches for its tablets, something worth considering for anyone planning to keep a device for several years.

Lumos wants to be known for more than projectors

!["The]("https://cassette.sphdigital.com.sg/image/hardwarezone/bfd5cc15e8f641faa21ea9d9528167f97824ced57d147245d796fd2050a38918?w=660&q=85")

The Lumos Tablet is the entry level tablet at a low S$149.00.

The tablet launch follows a broader expansion at Lumos.

Earlier this year, the company introduced its Evoke digital camera, aimed at casual photographers looking for a simpler and more affordable way to capture everyday moments.

Its growing portfolio also includes the Immerse gimbal camera, Dominate action camera, and Unleash karaoke machine.

Although these products serve different purposes, Tan says they share a common philosophy of making lifestyle technology accessible without premium-brand pricing.

Importantly, Lumos isn’t necessarily trying to build a tightly connected ecosystem where every device depends on another.

“Each LUMOS product works great on its own and fits naturally into different aspects of consumers’ lifestyles,” he said.

The longer-term ambition is to establish Lumos as a Singapore lifestyle technology brand covering entertainment, productivity and travel.

The company declined to share specific sales or revenue figures for its newer product categories, although Tan said customer feedback and word-of-mouth recommendations have been encouraging.

Lumos was also voted Best Mini Projector Brand in HardwareZone’s Readers’ Choice awards in 2024 and 2025, something the company hopes will help build consumer confidence in its newer products.

“In five years, we want LUMOS to be an established lifestyle technology brand that fits naturally into how Singaporeans live, work and play,” Tan said.

Whether its tablets will enjoy the same reception as its projectors remains an open question. Affordable pricing certainly helps, but performance, reliability and long-term software support will ultimately determine whether buyers stick with Lumos.

For now, the four tablets are available through the official Lumos Singapore online store, priced at:
