A 32-year-old man was on Monday (Nov 2) night detained under the Mental Health Act (Care and Treatment) after he was rescued from waters off a shopping mall in HarbourFront.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The incident happened at about 10.20pm in the waters in front of VivoCity at 1 HarbourFront Walk.<\/p>\n
A video of the incident posted on social media shows a topless man swimming in the said waters.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He was not unconscious and is seen occasionally glancing back towards the shore. The man also appears to be holding something in his hands.<\/p>\n
A Police Coast Guard (PCG) patrol craft is seen closing in towards the man with its searchlight pointed at an area near him.<\/p>\n
Firefighters are also seen waiting along the walkway near the waters.<\/p>\n
The Singapore Civil Defence Force told AsiaOne the man was rescued by PCG officers using a life buoy. It added that the man was assessed for minor injuries but declined to be taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n
In response to AsiaOne’s queries, the police stated that the man was apprehended under Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act 2008.<\/p>\n
Under the Act, the police have the power to arrest anyone believed to be a danger to himself or other people.<\/p>\n
