{"id":9777,"date":"2025-11-08T02:07:55","date_gmt":"2025-11-07T18:07:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=9777"},"modified":"2025-11-08T02:07:55","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T18:07:55","slug":"hot-headed-and-inexperienced-wps-kenneth-tiong-gets-flak-online-for-stupid-question-comment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=9777","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Hot-headed and inexperienced&#8217;: WP&#8217;s Kenneth Tiong gets flak online for &#8216;stupid question&#8217; comment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">A lack of decorum or a justified remark?<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Workers&#8217; Party MP Kenneth Tiong&#8217;s comment that National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat had asked a &#8220;stupid&#8221; question has sparked plenty of online debate, with some calling it &#8220;unparliamentary&#8221;, &#8220;offensive&#8221;, and &#8220;hotheaded&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The comment surfaced during a parliamentary <span><a class=\"text-primary-500 hover:underline\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/spore-police-were-already-probing-prince-groups-chen-zhi-before-us-indictment-chee-hong-tat?ref=inline-article\" target=\"_blank\">discussion on Nov 5 about family offices and sanctioned entities<\/a><\/span>, when Mr Chee asked Mr Tiong to clarify if the WP&#8217;s position advocated a zero-risk approach, or if he would agree to adopt a risk-proportionate approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Mr Tiong responded that there is a pattern of ministers asking rhetorical questions, before being told by Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng to respond to the question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary pt-md text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">&#8220;The answer is no, and I don&#8217;t think it is the minister&#8217;s point of view that you should, in fact, have a zero-risk approach, because it&#8217;s impossible. So he&#8217;s asking a stupid question,&#8221; Mr Tiong said.
