It said that the issue started at about noon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In response to queries from The Straits Times, <!-- -->ICA said on Nov 5 that planned electrical maintenance works were conducted at the Old Woodlands Checkpoint on Nov 4, from 10am to 2pm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While the Old Woodlands Checkpoint was temporarily unavailable for the clearance of arriving lorries during the works, lorry clearance continued at Woodlands Checkpoint<!-- -->, ICA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">During this period, some Singapore-bound cargo traffic built up on the Causeway, ICA said, adding that operations at the Old Woodlands Checkpoint resumed at around 4pm that day.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"ICA refutes Malaysian media claim that Causeway jam was caused by outage at Woodlands Checkpoint\" width=\"500\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">ICA said that later in the day, it observed that two lorries broke down on the Malaysian side of the Causeway towards Singapore at about 4.30pm and 6.30pm respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The breakdowns blocked one of the three arrival lanes, contributing to traffic queues extending from the lorry breakdown sites into Malaysia<!-- -->, the authority added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The congestion was exacerbated by the higher volume of vehicles during the evening peak period<!-- -->, ICA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The first lorry was removed only at 9.50pm that evening, ICA said<!-- -->, adding that the second was removed at <!-- -->about 12.20am<!-- --> on Nov 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">ICA said: \u201cDuring this period, traffic towards Woodlands Checkpoint was disrupted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cICA posted advisories on its Facebook page to alert travellers to the vehicle breakdowns and expected delays, and notify them when the affected lane reopened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The authority\u2019s response comes after Malaysian news outlet The Star, in its article headlined \u201c<!-- -->Power outage at Woodlands Checkpoint triggers massive Causeway gridlock<!-- -->\u201d, attributed the long queues to a power outage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Its report added: \u201cAlthough all counters were operating at optimum level at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex (BSI) here, the jam lasted for many hours due to a build-up of vehicles from the Singapore side.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It also reported that at press time, \u201cit remains unclear what caused the power outage in Singapore\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore\u2019s land border crossings with Malaysia \u2013 at Tuas and Woodlands \u2013 are among the busiest in the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">According to ICA statistics released in <!-- -->February<!-- -->, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/record-245-million-travellers-passed-through-singapores-checkpoints-in-2025-ica?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">close to 245 million travellers passed through <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/courts-crime\/record-245-million-travellers-passed-through-singapores-checkpoints-in-2025-ica?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">Singapore\u2019s checkpoints in 2025<\/span><\/a>,<!-- --> surpassing the <!-- -->230 million seen in the previous year<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">ICA then said that around <!-- -->three in four travellers had entered the country through the land checkpoints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">More recently, ICA said on Nov 1 that during the recent school holidays from <!-- -->Sept 4 to Sept 14, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/heavy-traffic-expected-at-woodlands-tuas-checkpoints-during-deepavali-long-weekend?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">more than 6.1 million travellers crossed the two checkpoints<\/span><\/a>, with the volume peaking at more than 599,000 on Sept 4<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The authority said that figure set a new single-day record, which
