A woman who allegedly allowed a 17-year-old teen to drive a rental car is accused of teaming up with five others to assault him at a cemetery after claiming he got into an accident with a motorcycle.<\/p>\n
The accused, Crystel Chong Hui Yi, 25, faces seven charges, including rioting and allowing an unlicensed minor to drive.<\/p>\n
According to the charges, Chong allegedly allowed the 17-year-old, who did not have a driving licence, to drive on a service road in the carpark of Block 64, Lorong 5 Toa Payoh, at about 12.50am on Nov 13, 2024.<\/p>\n
She is also accused of conspiring with five others to assault the teenager at Lim Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery between 11.28pm on Nov 25 and 1.29am the following day. The group allegedly assaulted him with punches and kicks while armed with a taser.<\/p>\n
A gag order is in place to protect the victim\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n

Shin Min Daily News<\/a> reported that Chong pleaded not guilty, and the trial began on Nov 3, with the prosecution calling the teen\u2019s mother to testify.<\/p>\n Chong allegedly allowed the 17-year-old, who did not have a driving licence, to drive on a service road in Toa Payoh.<\/p>\n PHOTO: SHIN MIN DAILY NEWS<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n The teen\u2019s mother testified that she and her husband run a Western food business.<\/p>\n On the day of the incident, she received a call from her daughter informing her that her son had gotten into trouble and that three people had turned up at their home.<\/p>\n The couple rushed home and encountered Chong and two others outside the lift.<\/p>\n According to Shin Min, Chong and her companions claimed that they urgently needed to speak to her son but had been unable to contact him.<\/p>\n They alleged that the teenager had knocked down a motorcycle<\/a> while driving, injuring its rider.<\/p>\n Chong said the car had been rented under her name and that the injured motorcyclist was seeking about $8,400 in compensation. She then asked the teen\u2019s parents to provide $2,400 upfront to help cover the costs.<\/p>\n The teen\u2019s mother said her husband eventually handed the group $1,000.<\/p>\n She further testified that on Nov 27, 2024, she suddenly received a call from her son asking to borrow $1,000.<\/p>\n During the call, she faintly heard someone beside him mention \u201c$2,000\u201d. Suspecting that someone was with her son, she could also tell that he was extremely frightened.<\/p>\n She eventually refused his request for money, after which her son hung up.<\/p>\n The following day, he returned home looking dishevelled and with injuries to his face. She then decided to take him to the police station.<\/p>\n During cross-examination by the defence lawyer, the teen\u2019s mother said she was shocked to learn that her son had been involved in the accident, as he was only 17 and did not have a driver\u2019s licence.<\/p>\n She agreed with the lawyer that Chong had not been aggressive or confrontational when speaking to her.<\/p>\n According to the mother, Chong claimed that she did not want the teen\u2019s parents to bear the consequences of their son\u2019s actions. She merely wanted them to understand her predicament.<\/p>\n The mother added that Chong contacted her again the following day, saying she was facing compensation claims from both the motorcyclist and the car rental company.<\/p>\n She told Chong that she was short of money but was willing to pawn her jewellery to raise funds for the compensation.<\/p>\n However, after being advised against it by relatives and friends, she eventually decided not to do so.<\/p>\n A female accomplice, who was 17 at the time, took the stand as a prosecution witness on Nov 4. Her boyfriend at the time was a friend of Chong\u2019s boyfriend.<\/p>\n She said that on the night of Nov 25, 2024, she and her boyfriend were watching a movie at a cinema when she received a call from Chong\u2019s boyfriend, asking them to meet in Yishun.<\/p>\n The couple then took a private-hire car to a basketball court in Yishun, where they met Chong, her boyfriend and two other male friends.<\/p>\n The group subsequently located the teenager and took him to a staircase landing of a nearby HDB block before bringing him to Lim Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery.<\/p>\n She said four of the male group members took turns punching and kicking the teenager, while two of them produced tasers, which they used to shock him.<\/p>\n She added that after Chong\u2019s boyfriend demanded money from the teenager, Chong stepped forward and kneed him in the face.<\/p>\n The female accomplice said Chong\u2019s boyfriend took the teenager home afterwards, as he did not want others to see the injuries on the latter\u2019s face.<\/p>\n She added that Chong\u2019s boyfriend had at one point instructed the teenager to call his mother to borrow money.<\/p>\n The teenager followed the instructions but could not obtain the money.<\/p>\n Chong\u2019s boyfriend then told him to call a friend to borrow money instead, but that attempt also \u201ccame to nothing\u201d.<\/p>\n The accomplice claimed she was using her phone nearby at the time and chatting about topics such as perfume and beauty products before leaving on her own.<\/p>\n The female accomplice said two male accomplices had punched the teenager at the staircase landing, with one of them also using a taser<\/a> on him.<\/p>\n During her testimony, she initially said Chong had noticed someone watching them from the opposite block and suggested moving to the cemetery.<\/p>\n However, when questioned by Chong\u2019s lawyer, she changed her account, saying she could not remember who had spotted the person in the opposite block.<\/p>\n She explained that the incident had happened two years ago and that she was not sure who had noticed the person.<\/p>\n Have something to say?
