In an archaeological complex strewn with ancient Buddhist, Jain and Hindu temples, this one – dedicated to the Hindu destroyer god, Shiva – is the show-stopper.

It’s the middle of the monsoon season in central India and I have plodded along the rough stone pathways elsewhere at the Ellora Caves complex in incessant, if mild, morning showers. But any discomfort is forgotten when I look down upon this 1,200-year-old temple that was carved top-down out of solid basalt rock.

<img decoding="async" alt="The Kailasa Temple, at the Ellora complex. It is estimated that more than 200,000 tonnes of rock were chiselled by hand to create the basic shapes, to which carvings and flourishes were later added. Measuring 30 metres in height, 90 metres in length and 53 metres in width, this is the world’s largest monolithic structure.

The view of the Kailasa Temple from above takes my breath away – and I am not referring just to the huffing and puffing of…

[4840
32398,5434,32399,32397,2284,12315,2388
post-97460","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-travel-globetrotting","tag-ajanta","tag-ancient","tag-cavetemples","tag-ellora","tag-history","tag-indias","tag-mystery","wpcat-4840-id
["GET
