A 27-year-old woman from Guangzhou, China, has gone missing after travelling alone to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to meet a man she befriended online.

The woman, surnamed Fu, flew from Guangzhou to Bangkok on 23 October before travelling onwards to Chiang Mai. However, she reportedly lost contact with her family and friends shortly after arriving.

According to her male friend, surnamed Zhou, the online acquaintance had allegedly promised to give her an iPhone 18. Fu was reportedly looking forward to the meeting and had even prepared a handmade gift for him.

Both Zhou and her family had reportedly warned her against travelling overseas alone to meet someone she only knew online, but she decided to go ahead with the trip.

Her family has since reported her missing, while Chinese police have become involved. Her relatives are also preparing to travel to Thailand to seek assistance from local authorities.

The incident comes just weeks after another 24-year-old Chinese woman was allegedly robbed after getting into a vehicle arranged by an online acquaintance in Thailand. She managed to escape by jumping out of the vehicle.

Fu’s whereabouts remain unknown, and her family is desperately hoping for news of her safety.
