Google and Xreal have officially launched the Xreal Aura, a pair of mixed-reality glasses that promises to deliver the experience of a full-sized XR headset without having to strap a bulky device to your face.

The promotional price, which runs until the end of December 2026, is US$1,099, which puts it US$200 below Meta’s upcoming US$1,299 VR Glasses, expected next year.

Developed together with Google and Qualcomm, the Aura is the first wired XR glasses powered by Google’s Android XR platform. It features transparent lenses that let users see their surroundings while displaying virtual screens, apps and other digital content in front of them.

You can ask Gemini anything, even when in Maps.

Phoot: Google

The glasses weigh under 95g and offer a 70-degree field of view. To keep the weight down, Xreal has moved the Snapdragon Reality Elite processor and battery into a separate, smartphone-sized computing device connected by a cable.

This means that you need to carry something extra around, but it takes most of the weight off your face.

You can watch movies on a big screen.

Photo: Google

The Aura is designed to do considerably more than simply display notifications or answer questions.

Users can open multiple Android apps simultaneously, arrange virtual windows around them and create a workspace that would otherwise require several physical monitors.

They can also connect a laptop through USB-C and display its screen alongside Android XR apps. A Bluetooth keyboard and mouse can turn the setup into a portable workstation.

For entertainment, the glasses can project a large virtual screen for watching YouTube, Google TV and other streaming services. The lenses can also be dimmed to reduce distractions.

Gamers can connect compatible PCs and handheld consoles through USB-C, play Android games or explore experiences designed specifically for XR.

Google says more than 150 XR-specific apps and experiences are available, alongside the existing Android apps through Google Play.

The Aura also supports spatial viewing, which can convert compatible photos, videos and games into 3D experiences.

You can ask Gemini for information while gaming.

Photo: Google

Google’s Gemini AI is another major part of the experience.

Rather than functioning purely as a voice assistant, Gemini is said to be able to understand what users are looking at, including their surroundings and content displayed on virtual screens.

Users can ask questions about documents, get help organising virtual windows or seek assistance while playing games.

Google has also introduced a feature that lets Gemini highlight objects or information directly within the user’s field of view.

Xreal has announced additional accessories, including a wireless game controller developed with GameSir featuring a dedicated Gemini button, and a portable folding keyboard. Pricing and availability for these accessories have not been announced.

Plug in your laptop with Wired Mirroring and spread your work across multiple windows.

Photo: Google

The Xreal Aura comes in two configurations:

Both promotional prices are available until the end of December 2026.

Orders are open in the United States, Canada and South Korea, with Japan following on 2 November. Shipments are expected to begin in mid-November.

Customers who pre-ordered at the higher price will receive a refund for the difference, according to Xreal.

There is currently no confirmed Singapore pricing or release date.

With Meta preparing to launch its own VR Glasses in 2027, the Aura gives Google and Xreal a head start in the emerging market for lightweight mixed-reality devices.

The bigger question is whether consumers will find enough reasons to wear them regularly, especially when the glasses still need a separate computing device to work.

Your own portable workspace, cinema and gaming screen
