Inside the lanterns constructed with bamboo and willow sticks and sheathed in mulberry paper, she has placed pulsating LED lights that cast moving shadows.

There is something cinematic about these luminous sculptures that are traditionally vessels of memories and loss. The pulsating light in each lantern corresponds to a section of the song Auld Lang Syne – the popular Scottish folk song also known as “Friendship Forever and Ever” in the Chinese-speaking world – which also forms the basis of the exhibition’s title, “Auld Lang Syne (prelude)”. The visual effect recalls the movement of a zou ma deng, or Chinese spinning lantern.

Wu was born in Beijing but moved to Hong Kong in her early teens, where she graduated from City University of Hong Kong’s School of Creative Media in 2012. Her training in experimental cinema, video art and film theory became the foundation of her later works. She fondly cites influences from faculty members such as Eddie Leung Hiu-ming and Stanley Kwan Kam-pang, who are also important figures in Hong Kong’s cinema and experimental video art scene.

In her New York solo exhibition at 47 Canal, Hong Kong-raised artist Cici Wu animates the gallery space with 11 paper lanterns made using traditional…

[33
1785,32248,27262,5810,3569,32247,11424,1786,3155
post-96377","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-bored-interesting","tag-artist","tag-cici","tag-diasporic","tag-experiences","tag-hong","tag-kongraised","tag-poignant","tag-turns","tag-works","wpcat-33-id
["GET
