And at Apple’s “Pro and Tell” event, I had the chance to play around with it for a little while.

The first thing that struck me was how thin it is. Apple says it’s just 5.4mm thick, which means it’s 0.9mm or around 14% slimmer than the last-generation iPad mini. It’s definitely noticeable. It weighs a little less too. On the whole, I thought it felt nicer in the hands.

The new iPad mini is just 5.4mm thick.

Photo: HWZ

The display is now OLED. I didn’t notice a huge difference, but it does look very nice. At 8.5 inches, it’s a bit bigger too, but again, I can’t say I noticed the size difference. Despite the larger display, the overall size of the iPad mini is mostly the same; that’s because Apple shrunk the bezels as opposed to making the iPad mini larger overall. I think that’s the right decision. The iPad mini has always been loved for its compact size.

For the first time, the iPad mini can be ordered with a display that has a nano-texture finish. This greatly reduces glare and reflection, and would be my choice if I were ordering the new iPad mini. However, it’s worth noting that it’s only available on the 256GB and 512GB models, and it costs an extra S$150.

The display is 8.5 inches now, but I didn’t really notice the size difference.

Photo: HWZ

Performance is brisk, as you would expect from a tablet sporting Apple’s newest A20 Pro chip. However, the display is limited to 60Hz, so it doesn’t look or feel as fluid as, say, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, and iPhone Duo.

The iPad mini has a new speaker system too, with tweeters at the sides and woofers under the display. Unfortunately, given how noisy the venue was, I couldn’t hear it in action.

The new iPad mini comes in two colours: Midnight and Starlight. The slightly larger and higher quality OLED display is a much-welcomed update, and it’s noticeably thinner and lighter. The IP67 dust and water resistance rating should make it a more hardy device that you can take with you to more places too. Stay tuned for my full review.

Availability and pricing

The iPad mini is available to pre-order now, and it goes on sale on 6 November.
