<\/div>The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) today detained a Malaysian couple suspected of attempting to take nearly RM3 million in undeclared cash into Singapore.<\/p><\/div>\n
AKPS deputy director-general (operations) Nasaruddin M Nasir said the couple, aged 41 and 42, were detained at the Sultan Iskandar Building (BSI) at about 11.40am while passing through the vehicle inspection zone heading towards Woodlands, Singapore, in an MPV.<\/p>\n
He said an inspection by three AKPS officers uncovered RM1,971,697 and S$300,000 in cash stored in three boxes, a paper bag and a black backpack in the rear passenger area.<\/p>\n
\u201cFurther checks were carried out when the driver behaved suspiciously. He was instructed to open the luggage compartment and passenger seats for inspection,\u201d he said at a press conference at the AKPS BSI office here.<\/p>\n
Nasaruddin said the couple from Johor was believed to be travelling to Singapore for a holiday.<\/p>\n
He said the agency was investigating why they were taking such a large amount of cash to the republic and why they did not declare it.<\/p>\n
Both individuals were taken to court this morning for a remand application.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe vehicle was seized and handed over to the customs department for further action,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nasaruddin said individuals carrying cash exceeding or equivalent to US$10,000 across the country\u2019s borders, either into or out of the country, were required to declare it to the authorities.<\/p>\n
\u201cAKPS is committed to tightening controls at all entry points into the country to curb violations of the law that could affect national revenue,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said the case is being investigated under Regulation 55(1)(b) of the Customs Regulations 2019 requiring a person arriving in or leaving Malaysia to declare cash and negotiable instruments that have a total value exceeding US$10,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
