AMD also stated that mobile APUs, including those featured in AI Halo PCs and ROG Flow Z13 and Asus TUF A14 laptops, will receive FSR Upscaling 4.1.

As for handheld PCs, AMD is targeting those powered by Ryzen AI 9 and Z2 processors. This includes the ROG Xbox Ally X and X20 handhelds, where Asus has already pushed a preview update with FSR 4.1 support. It’s notable that this version of FSR 4.1 coming to handhelds is half the size of the original INT8 (8-bit integer) model that the discrete GPUs will use, in order to make it more efficient.

Notably, the company also stated that FSR Upscaling 4.1 will be making its way to Xbox Series X|S. It didn’t state when, but in any case, it’s a long overdue addition to Microsoft’s consoles – Sony has already made headway into graphics upscaling with PSSR on the PS5 Pro, and the newly-released QSSR on the base PS5 (both of which were also borne out of collaborations with AMD).

<picture></picture>Play

FSR Upscaling 4.1 should improve upon the previous FSR generations; AMD namedropped the 6800 XT as a GPU that should gain more detail at 4K with it enabled. It also noted that, for Strix Halo and Gorgon Halo-powered devices, FSR 4.1 Performance Mode achieves higher image quality than FSR 3.1 at 1440p, while maintaining frame rates above 60 FPS.

To be clear, this upgrade for older Radeon GPUs has been a long time coming. Although FSR 4 was a major selling point of the Radeon RX 9000 series, there has been consistent demand for it to be pushed downstream, given that older cards are the ones to benefit most from upscaling tech like this.

AMD, in an interview with TechPowerUp, explained that the delay in pushing out FSR 4 for older cards was due to differences in microarchitecture across the different RDNA generations.

Specifically, FSR 4 was developed with RDNA 4’s support for the FP8 (8-bit floating point) data type in mind. Additional work was required to get FSR 4 working with RDNA 2 and 3, which only support INT8; RDNA 2 cards were particularly tricky to work with due to the lack of dedicated AI accelerators.

Now that it’s here for RX 6000 GPUs, though, it does mean that those who are still hanging on to this generation of graphics cards can get upscaling that’s supported by over 400 titles, including GTA V Enhanced, PUBG Battlegrounds, Ace Combat 8 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered. To get FSR Upscaling 4.1 on your RX 6000 card, you’ll need to download AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 26.10.1.

For ROG Xbox Ally X owners who want to get the preview with FSR Upscaling 4.1, the update can be found in the Update Centre in the Armoury Crate SE app.

If you own an older Radeon GPU, this is good news for you.
