On the first night of his “After Hours Til Dawn Tour” at Kai Tak Stadium on October 24, Abel Tesfaye, professionally known as The Weeknd, debuted a brand new track titled “Hong Kong”.

The track heavily sampled pop diva Faye Wong’s original Cantonese vocals from the song “Seasonal Wind” (also known as “Monsoon”), seamlessly blending her melody with his signature R&B style. The surprise debut was met with thunderous applause and set social media ablaze. But what is the deeper social significance of the original song, and who was behind its magic?

Released in February 1993, “Seasonal Wind” was the fourth song on Faye Wong’s fifth studio album, No Regrets. The album, which exceeded triple platinum in sales, is one of her most iconic releases.

The song is an adaptation of “One Day I Will,” which was created by Taiwanese songwriting duo Yang Li-te and Chen Hsiao-hsia. Known for their portrayal of urban romance and wistfulness, “One Day I Will” (1990) is celebrated as one of their most representative works as a duo, alongside Karen Mok Man-wai’s 1997 ballad “He Doesn’t Love Me,” and was famously covered by Singaporean songstress Joi Chua in 2005.
