{"id":95792,"date":"2026-10-27T05:53:06","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T21:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=95792"},"modified":"2026-10-27T05:53:06","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T21:53:06","slug":"sembcorp-gets-conditional-approval-to-import-1-3gw-of-power-into-singapore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=95792","title":{"rendered":"Sembcorp Gets Conditional Approval to Import 1.3GW of Power into Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"divArticleTextForDesktop\">\n<p>Singapore&#8217;s government has conditionally authorized state-backed Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd to import 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of renewable electricity, advancing a tripartite energy pact with Malaysia and Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sembcorp Utilities is working with its consortium partners MY Energy Consortium, which comprises Petronas, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and Petrovietnam Technical Services Corp, to source and integrate low-carbon electricity from regional and domestic resources, including offshore wind from Vietnam and solar power from Malaysia&#8221;, the city-state&#8217;s Energy Market Authority (EMA) said in an online statement Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Petronas said separately Malaysia will serve as &#8220;both a recipient and transit country for the regional power flow&#8221;. The Malaysian segment of the project will also include battery energy storage, Petronas said.<\/p>\n<p>The Singaporean utility plans to begin importing power under the cross-border cooperation project in 2035. &#8220;Over the next few years, the consortium will continue to develop the project, including to obtain all requisite approvals from relevant jurisdictions, conclude power purchase agreements with buyers and secure sufficient financing&#8221;, the EMA said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To date, EMA has granted Conditional Approvals and Conditional Licenses to electricity import projects from Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam&#8221;, it added. &#8220;EMA will continue to engage companies with credible and commercially viable proposals that can contribute to the decarbonization of Singapore&#8217;s power sector&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 agreement by leading energy companies from Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam includes the potential export of wind energy from Vietnam to its two neighbors via a new subsea cable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Together, the consortia will focus on unlocking Vietnam&#8217;s rich renewable energy resources -particularly offshore wind power &#8211; as a source for green electron generation and to supply clean electricity across borders&#8221;, said a joint statement May 26, 2025. &#8220;This alliance reflects the growing momentum towards a regionally integrated ASEAN Power Grid.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsArticleDianomoAds\" style=\"display:none\">\n<hr style=\"margin:5px 0px;\"\/>\n<p>Advertisement &#8211; Scroll to continue<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;Under this agreement, the consortia will evaluate the feasibility of exporting renewable energy from Vietnam to Malaysia and Singapore via a new subsea cable, wheeled in and through the Peninsular Malaysia National Grid with potential additional firming renewable energy generation and storage&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where the 11-member bloc advanced talks on a regional power grid.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, 2026 ASEAN chair the Philippines said the regional grouping has reached &#8220;consensus&#8221; on an updated memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All countries have agreed on the enhanced MoU, and we will await the completion of all the signatures&#8221;, Philippine Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said in a statement October 16.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To support APG operationalization, ASEAN also finalized strategic workplans for the APG Task Forces, developed by the ASEAN Power Grid Consultative Committee based on recommendations from the ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) III&#8221;, the Philippine Energy Department said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These workplans will guide cross-border electricity interconnections, regional power planning and the establishment of a Regional Planning Framework in preparation for AIMS IV&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>When Singapore chairs ASEAN next year, the regional grouping expects to make further advancements in regulatory matters for the ASEAN Submarine Power Cable Development Framework, the Philippine agency added.<\/p>\n<p><em>To contact the author, email jov.onsat@rigzone.com<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n                        <!--Comments--><\/p>\n<div class=\"news_details_is_post\">\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n                                    What do you think?
