With recent advances in generative AI, video game hacking and piracy are advancing faster than ever, much to the chagrin of the game industry. As Sony scrambles to release new firmware updates in response to PS5 jailbreaking efforts, Nintendo hackers are finding similar success.<\/p>\n

A new exploit for the Nintendo Switch 2 lets hackers fully dump the system\u2019s firmware and games to a PC by accessing the console\u2019s file system. According to Kotaku, users on the GBAtemp forums recently shared an exploit that involves accessing the file system (data stored on the Switch 2) and manipulating the console’s memory. While hackers previously discovered how to view and modify the Switch 2’s file system using an app called SmileBASIC4, this new exploit gives more control.<\/p>\n

Specifically, the hack allows users to manipulate anything in the file system, allowing them to dump files, including games, onto a PC. While hackers won\u2019t be able to play these games on PC until a Switch 2 emulator is developed, dumping games makes future modding and piracy efforts for the Switch 2 much easier. This discovery will almost certainly accelerate Switch 2 emulation and reverse-engineering attempts.<\/p>\n

Although the exploit doesn\u2019t give users \u201ckernel-level access\u201d to the Switch 2, which would give hackers complete control over the console for easy jailbreaking and more, it will likely accelerate efforts to get there. This exploit works on the Ver. 23.0.1 version of Switch 2 firmware, which Nintendo will almost certainly patch soon.<\/p>\n

Beyond console hacking, generative AI has fueled a surge in game decompilation (reverse engineering a game\u2019s code), which has in turn led to lots of unofficial browser ports of old games like Halo: Combat Evolved<\/em>. While game decompilation experts have criticized AI-assisted decompilation jobs as sloppy and full of bugs, that hasn\u2019t stopped many of these projects from going viral on social media. Xbox launched the Xbox Labs division in response to this trend, which is aimed at looking into how the company can make use of these AI-enabled ports, but like the rest of the industry, the company seems on the back foot.<\/p>\n

Another strange AI-slop-related trend is games being awkwardly spliced together using Claude\u2019s universal-modder plugin. One viral video showed an unholy combination of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2<\/em> and Skate 3<\/em>, which, while attention-grabbing, is probably less fun than actually just playing Skate 3<\/em>. The situation is a mess that will likely only get messier.<\/p>\n
