It\u2019s not a new gaming mouse \u2013 and surprisingly, not the often-teased toaster either. Instead, Razer has taken a swing at something entirely new, and this time it doesn\u2019t involve RGB lighting (well, not yet). The Singapore-based tech company has teamed up with paddle-sport maker Joola to create a limited-edition pickleball paddle, the Joola Razer Perseus Pro IV 16mm<\/b>.<\/p>\n
You\u2019d probably assume this was a joke (I did when I first saw the press release), but it\u2019s every bit as serious as it sounds. The Razer paddle features a raw-carbon surface for extra spin, a balanced swing weight for quicker reactions, and even an NFC chip that links to Joola\u2019s app for player tips and warranty tracking. Naturally, it\u2019s dressed in Razer\u2019s signature green-and-black aesthetic. Only 1,337 (or \u201cl33t\u201d for those familiar with gamer culture) units are being made and each will retail for an eye-watering US$299.95<\/b>. For context, that\u2019s about the price of a decent Razer keyboard-and-mouse combo.<\/p>\n
The timing\u2019s oddly perfect for Singapore, and perhaps no coincidence. Pickleball is booming here \u2013 popping up across HDB void decks, condo courts and community centres \u2013 though not everyone\u2019s thrilled about it. According to a The Straits Times article (read about it here), town councils have received a steady stream of noise complaints about the \u201cconstant noise\u201d of pickleball rallies echoing through estates. Some have even imposed quiet-hour restrictions or barred the game from certain multi-purpose courts after 9pm.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why this collaboration feels unintentionally funny \u2013 and slightly poetic \u2013 to me. Razer, the same brand that gave us some of the loudest mechanical keyboards around, is now venturing into a sport already accused of being too noisy. Maybe the next version should include Chroma lighting or haptic feedback. At least then I might finally have an excuse to pick up the fledgling sport.<\/p>\n
