Also, Jolteon Gold Star is surely a thing of beauty.

            2

Umbreon

<picture>
        </picture>Image: The Pokémon Company

The Generation Two Pokémon games, Gold and Silver, introduced two new Eeveelutions to Eevee’s branching evolutionary tree. Perhaps the more immediately intriguing of the pair was Umbreon, which boasted the then-new Dark typing and could be obtained by leveling up a highly friendly Eevee at night.

Umbreon’s sleek black design, glowing yellow rings, and impressive defensive stats make it a perennial fan favorite. While its relatively feeble offensive capabilities can make battles a prolonged affair, its remarkable staying power and plethora of support options still provide an intriguing battle style in-game.

Umbreon’s popularity also extends directly into the Pokémon TCG, where it stars on some of the most coveted modern grails. These include Evolving Skies’ iconic “Moonbreon” (Umbreon VMAX Alternate Art) and Prismatic Evolutions’ striking “Sunbreon” (Umbreon ex Special Illustration Rare). Both cards command prices well into the four figures, even ungraded, with pristine graded examples fetching considerably more.

Indeed, the obsession with Umbreon cards has reached rather extraordinary heights. One collector even traded a $130,000 car for a collection of miscut Evolving Skies cards featuring an unusual Umbreon VMAX. That’s quite a premium for Eevee’s fetching Dark-type evolution.

            1

Espeon

<picture>
        </picture>Image: The Pokémon Company

Eevee’s Psychic-type evolution, Espeon, boasts arguably the most elegant and striking design of the entire Eeveelution family. It’s also a fearsome special attacker, with its 130 base Special Attack tied with Glaceon for the highest among Eeveelutions, while its impressive 110 Speed allows it to dispatch many opponents before they can retaliate.

While Umbreon certainly boasts a gorgeous design, formidable defenses, and a cool typing, its more supporting role in battle isn’t quite as satisfying as Espeon’s sheer offensive prowess. Espeon can hit hard and fast, and its combination of speed, special attacks, and the always-useful Magic Bounce ability makes it a delight to deploy in-game.

In the Pokémon TCG, Espeon’s chase cards aren’t quite as famous as those of its nocturnal brethren, but stunning pieces of cardboard like Espeon ex from Unseen Forces and the Holo Aquapolis Espeon certainly make it a notable grail subject for collectors. The latter shares a set with the magnificent Crystal Lugia, which recently tied its $360,000 auction record, further demonstrating the enduring appeal of the TCG‘s early e-Reader era.

Eight evolutions, eight devoted fan clubs, and absolutely no chance everyone agrees.
