{"id":95263,"date":"2026-10-24T11:27:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-24T03:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=95263"},"modified":"2026-10-24T11:27:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-24T03:27:00","slug":"haze-in-singapore-air-quality-back-in-the-unhealthy-range","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=95263","title":{"rendered":"Haze in Singapore: Air quality back in the unhealthy range"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->The air quality across the island deteriorated overnight, with the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) recording unhealthy levels of air pollution early on Oct 24.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At 7am, the PSI readings were 115 in the north and south regions, 117 in the east, 142 in the west and 133 in the central region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PM2.5 readings \u2013 which are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/st-explains-psi-or-pm2-5-what-air-quality-measures-should-i-refer-to-during-the-haze?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">gauged hourly and reflect the current air quality<\/span><\/a> \u2013 were also elevated across the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At 7am, the PM2.5 readings were 79 in the north, 78 (south), 68 (east), 107 (west) and 94 (central).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There had been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/haze-eases-in-singapore-as-residents-wake-up-to-improved-air-quality?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">brief respite from the haze early on Oct 23<\/span><\/a>, when PSI readings were in the good to moderate range and PM2.5 levels were in the normal range.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base st_visuals st_visuals-embed\" title=\"st_visuals embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2026\/08\/singapore-haze-widget\/index.html\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"eager\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">However, the air quality began worsening just before noon that day, when the PM2.5 levels began rising. They have continued fluctuating in the elevated range since, spiking at 146 at midnight, just five points shy of the <!-- -->high<!-- --> range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singapore has been experiencing unhealthy air quality, denoted by 24-hour PSI readings above 101, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/environment\/spore-is-experiencing-its-12th-consecutive-day-of-unhealthy-air-the-longest-since-2015-haze-crisis?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><span class=\"inline font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"typography-test-id\">since Oct 5.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The 24-hour PSI, which is a rolling index of six key air pollutants, reflects air quality in Singapore over the past day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">When air quality breaches this threshold, people, especially the elderly, children and those with health issues, should start scaling down outdoor activities.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"font-primary-headline-md-semibold\" data-testid=\"article-subhead-test-id\">Forecast for Oct 24<\/h2>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In its daily advisory on the evening of Oct 23, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said moderate to unhealthy air quality is expected on Oct 24, with the PSI forecast to be in the range of 90 to 140.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Smoke haze from Sumatra was seen drifting towards Singapore and was also observed over Kalimantan on Oct 23, NEA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While showers are forecast over Singapore and the surrounding region on Oct 24, some smoke haze may be transported towards Singapore from Sumatra under prevailing south-southeasterly or south-southwesterly winds, it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Hazy conditions may improve from Oct 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Winds are expected to blow from the south-west or west from Oct 25, NEA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This may help reduce the smoke haze transported to Singapore, it said, adding that showers over Singapore and areas nearby could also help with the haze situation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NASA satellite shows high carbon monoxide concentration across South-east Asia\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/A6VrEEbmyjc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
