Holding on to a newspaper cutting for years reminded Sarah and Jeff Lee of whom to contact when the time came to renovate their 3,100 sq ft (288 square metre) 1980s Repulse Bay duplex. Several years ago, designer Peggy Bels answered that call.<\/p>\n
The couple, who have lived there for two-plus decades, told Bels they admired her work. They described their home as a place where conversation-fuelled dinner parties stretch well into the night and house guests are frequent. How could Bels improve it?<\/p>\n
Four bedrooms and two bathrooms were grouped on the upper floor, with a fifth bedroom, kitchen, living\/dining areas and powder room below. Given the couple\u2019s need for only two bedrooms plus a study, Bels, founder of Peggy Bels Interior Design, suggested repurposing one bedroom to expand the couple\u2019s private domain, and eliminating another as a key design element of the remodel of the flat \u2013 restoring height.<\/p>\n

<\/div>The eight-month-long renovation began in 2023 with the removal of a false ceiling in the living area, added by the previous owner, in addition to the small bedroom above it, which dramatically expanded the vertical volume of the space. In doing so, the developer\u2019s original intent of a 5.8-metre (19-foot), double-height ceiling was restored.<\/p>\n
This intervention completely changed the perception of the room, according to Bels. \u201cThe increased ceiling height brings a greater sense of space, light and openness, while allowing new, taller glazing to become a defining architectural feature,\u201d she says. \u201cNatural light now travels much deeper into the interior, strengthening the connection with the terrace and surrounding views.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
