It’s called the iPhone Duo, mostly because Apple intended it to feel like an iPhone when it’s closed and an iPad when it’s unfolded. Apple would like users to think they are getting two devices in one, because this is a phone that starts at S$3,099. That’s more than the cost of a base iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPad mini together. That’s because it weighs 254g (yes, over a quarter of a kilo) and measures 11.3mm thick when folded. To give these figures some context, Samsung’s Z Fold8, which has similarly-sized outer and inner displays, is 201g and just 9.7mm thick when folded. Tipping the scales at 254g also means it’s slightly heavier than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which is already a pretty heavy phone. The Fold8 is surely the more compact and svelte phone, and it fits pockets more comfortably. It feels more natural to use closed too.

The Duo feels very chunky in the hands when it’s closed, and that problem is exacerbated if you use a phone case – which you will, because who isn’t going to protect their precious folding phone? With Apple’s Folio with Kickstand case, the Duo measured a stumpy 15mm when it’s closed. That’s about the thickness of two conventional slab phones stacked on top of each other. But because it’s so short – just under 12cm when folded – it actually slips into pockets easier than both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, even if it creates quite a sizeable bulge. Overall, even with a case, it’s more pocketable than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and on a par with the smaller iPhone 18 Pro.

Fold8 on the left, Duo on the right. Along with its titanium frame, the Duo feels solid – almost unbreakable – in the hand. In addition, it also has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, which is the same as the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Obviously, I’m not going to dunk the review unit in water, but it’s good to know that it’s no less durable than a regular non-folding iPhone. This means it also trumps the Fold8’s IP48 rating.

One thing that stands out about the Duo is its asymmetric outer display with pronounced rounded corners. This has two effects: it makes the Duo look like a “D” when it’s closed – which may or may not be a coincidence – and quickly lets users know which side to unfold the phone. Happily, when the Duo is unfolded, its weight and chunkiness are less obvious. Missing from the Duo is the Action Button, which is a pity because I use mine to launch my banking app for QR payments. The Duo has volume control buttons too, but the placement will need some getting used to because it’s on the top. iPhones always had their volume control buttons on the left, but you can’t do this for the Duo because of the hinge.

The hinge and speakers

The hinge cover is Grade 5 titanium with a micro-blasted finish.

Photo: HWZ

The hinge is an integral part of any foldable phone. A well-designed one not only minimises the crease (more on the crease later), it can also improve the overall ownership experience by making opening and closing the phone a satisfying and tactile event. Closing the Duo, in particular, feels gratifying because it “clacks” as the two sides come together – which reminds me of the thunk you get when closing the doors of a well-made luxury car.

Apple says the Duo’s hinge consists of over 100 tiny components and that it has a “variable torque profile”. What this means is that the level of resistance that you encounter changes as you unfold the Duo. It feels light at first, but then you are met with more resistance as you unfold it. This is necessary for the Duo to keep its shape as it is unfolded in its various modes. As for longevity, it’s too early to tell. I’ve only been using the phone for the past week; I’ll report back in a few weeks’ time.

The hinge allows the Duo to be placed in various positions.

Photo: HWZ

The placement of the speakers is quite interesting. This avoids them being on just one side when you fold it and hold in landscape orientation (Fold8, I’m looking at you). Does it work? I think it mostly does. Like the outer display, it features ProMotion, but a slightly lower pixel density count of 430 ppi. It goes without saying that this is the largest display ever found on an iPhone. The first thing most people would notice is that it has a matte finish. As far as I’m aware, this is the first foldable to have a inner display with such a finish, and it makes you wonder why no one has done it earlier. Like most matte finishes on a display, it does dull colours a tad, but this is still a bright and vibrant screen. Peak brightness is 3,000 nits, and it is slightly less legible on a bright day compared to the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, but it’s not a night-and-day difference, and doesn’t render the display unusable on a bright day.

But the upside is that it significantly reduces glare and reflection, and makes the crease less conspicuous. You have to really seek it out to see it. It resists smudges quite well too. However, this is a bit of a double-edged sword because smudges on the screen are onerous to clean. A wipe – even with Apple’s own polishing cloth – will not suffice; you will need some sort of liquid to help lift those smudges off the display.

The Duo next to the Galaxy Z Fold8. The most notable change is that the dock and essential controls have been moved to the side to maximise the amount of vertical space. For longtime iPhone users, this can be a bit jarring at first, but you’ll soon get used to it.

Much has be said about the animation that occurs when you open the Duo that blends the outer and inner displays, it’s undeniably cool, but that’s mostly a visual gimmick. A more tangible new feature is the improved Standby mode. Standby mode isn’t new – your conventional slab iPhones will go into Standby when they’re placed on their sides and connected to a charger. In the Duo, however, it’s invoked on the outer display or inner display whenever it is partially folded and set on a surface. Apple has also introduced new faces, most of which are highly customisable. This is understandable when you realise how fragmented the Android space is – there are many phones sporting different screen sizes and aspect ratios.

It’s too early to tell if the Duo will be unaffected by this, but Apple has always had a good track record with app compatibility, and there’s evidence to suggest that developers are on board with the Duo. When I first got the phone, most apps weren’t properly optimised for the Duo. I don’t have a temperature gun, but it feels warmer than the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. It may still have a vapour chamber, but it has to be a smaller one given the space constraints, and that must have had a negative impact on sustained performance. In fact, Apple’s own claims say the Duo has slightly poorer sustained performance than the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Running the intensive Solar Bay stress test, I found that the Duo’s scores dropped more quickly than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its final scores were also significantly lower at 9858 versus the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s 13,012.

The titanium frame of the Duo looks so good.

Photo: HWZ

In practice, however, you are unlikely to notice this drop in performance. It’s the weakest camera in the iPhone 18 Pro, and it’s the same story in the Duo too.

The main camera takes very good photo even in these hazy conditions.

Photo: HWZ

The main camera is a 48MP unit, but it’s a very different unit from the one in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Apple is coy, but if we compare the specs, the Duo’s main camera seems to be identical to the one found in the iPhone 17e. That’s not an ideal starting point, but unless you view these photos on a big display, the differences will be minimal, especially in good light. If you are only after the form factor, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 comes close and is arguably better in some ways. Its screens are marginally larger than the Duo’s, but it’s even lighter and slimmer. There’s no question that the Fold8 feels better in the hand. However, it can’t match the Duo’s durability. And because it doesn’t support Flex mode, the only official ways of using the Fold8 are either completely folded or unfolded. It’s surprising that Samsung has this interesting form factor and then chose to do nothing to take advantage of it. But since the Fold8 starts at S$2,498, it is significantly less expensive than the Duo.

Samsung isn’t the only Android alternative. There’s also Xiaomi’s Fold 18, which – surprise, surprise – not only has the same screen sizes as the Duo, but also the same asymmetrical design. We haven’t evaluated the Fold 18, so it’s hard to draw any meaningful comparisons, but some standout specs include a triple camera setup and a large 6,000mAh battery. It should also be even more affordable than the Fold8, so even if it doesn’t deliver a comparable experience, it can be considered the budget option.

Final thoughts & buying advice

The Duo’s form factor enables new ways to multitask and use your iPhone.

Photo: HWZ

As a foldable phone, the Duo is almost irreproachable. The displays are fantastic, the build quality is high, the performance is peerless, and the battery life is more than adequate. The matte display seems trivial, but it minimises the crease and gives the main display a premium look and feel. Water and dust resistance is also on a par with most flagship phones.

Having that foldable display and folding form factor is not only convenient in some ways, it also opens up interesting use cases. The software tricks, such as split-screen functions and even that unfolding animation, help it stand out and make it feel like a fun and special device to use. Apple took a long time to give us a foldable phone, but its first attempt is a very good one, so the wait was mostly worth it.

The Duo comes in two colours: Star White and Night Sky (pictured here).

Photo: HWZ

All things considered, I have two main gripes with the phone. The first is that I wished it had the same camera system as an iPhone 18 Pro. But considering the space constraints, doing so would probably mean bending the laws of physics. The second is the price. The Duo is one of the most expensive phones you can buy, because even the cheapest version will set you back at S$3,099. You’ll probably want to get AppleCare+ too since it’s so expensive to repair, and this adds to the cost even more.

Storage

Price

256GB

S$3,099

512GB

S$3,399

1TB

S$3,999

2TB

S$4,899

Can you rationalise the purchase of a phone that starts at S$3,099? You can try, but it’s extremely hard. For that money, you could get 256GB versions of an iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini with change to spare. Some would argue that having an iPhone and an iPad beats having a single Duo, and that’s certainly a valid perspective. You get better cameras with the iPhone 18 Pro, and an iPad mini has a slightly larger display and is a proper tablet.

Could this form factor be the future of iPhones? A Duo will slip into most pockets, while there’s no pocket in the world big enough for both an iPhone 18 Pro and iPad mini. Ultimately, it is this convenience and versatility that you are paying for. Whether that’s worth it will depend on your personal preferences and use cases. Those who have a penchant for travelling light or a deep love for big screens will see the appeal of the Duo most clearly.

Personally, I can see the Duo being my main device. I love how fun it is to use and its versatility. The main camera, which I thought could be a dealbreaker, is good enough for documenting everyday life. However, when I’m travelling, I’ll most definitely miss having the Pro iPhone’s telephoto camera. Fortunately (or not), I don’t travel for leisure much. Which is just as well, since my bank account will most certainly be depleted after I’ve purchased one.

Note: If you are looking to buy an iPhone Duo, be sure to check out our telco price plan comparison article.
