Before Juan Diego Florez became one of the most celebrated opera tenors of his generation, he was on his way to being a pop star.<\/p>\n
Music was always part of family life. His father, Ruben Florez, was a respected singer of Peruvian criolla<\/em> folk music; his mother, Maria Teresa Salom, managed a Lima pub with live music. As a boy, Juan Diego Florez would sometimes be asked to stand in and perform with his guitar.<\/p>\n That early exposure gave him his first taste of being on stage, and by his teens, he was writing his own songs. In 1989, he won a singing competition, which was broadcast on TV nationwide. \u201cThen I began to become famous in Peru,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n At 17, he entered the national music conservatory in Lima intending to sharpen his skills as a singer and pop composer.
