SINGAPORE – Consumers who have bought Ohm Brand Dried Grapes and cannot tolerate or are allergic to sulphites are advised not to eat the snack, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said.<\/p>\n
SFA, in a statement on Nov 6, said it detected sulphur dioxide in the snack, but the allergen was not declared on the food packaging label.<\/p>\n
It said: \u201cSulphite does not pose a food safety issue to consumers at large, except for those who are intolerant of or allergic to sulphites.\u201d<\/p>\n
If consumers have eaten Ohm Brand Dried Grapes \u2013 imported from India \u2013 they should seek medical advice, especially if they have concerns about their health, SFA added. <\/p>\n
Excessive levels of sulphur dioxide in food can trigger allergic reactions in people who are hypersensitive to sulphites, and result in symptoms like hives, itchiness, stomachache, diarrhoea and vomiting. <\/p>\n
Consumers can also contact the outlet where the snack was bought if they have inquiries. <\/p>\n
Under Singapore\u2019s rules, if a food product contains ingredients known to cause hypersensitivity when consumed, the food packaging label must declare the ingredient. <\/p>\n
Sulphur dioxide was undeclared on the snack\u2019s packaging, which is why SFA has directed the importer Santhiyaasree Marketing to recall the implicated product.<\/p>\n
