LONDON: A power outage at a Google Cloud data centre near London caused serious failures to services on Tuesday, leading to widespread disruptions for several UK banks.<\/p>\n
Google said in a service health update that most services had returned to normal by 1210 GMT (8.10pm Singapore time), six hours after the incident began.<\/p>\n
“We are seeing the recovery of services for most workloads in europe-west2,” the US tech giant said, referring to its London data centre.<\/p>\n
Google said its cloud services suffered an outage “due to a power event”, in an incident that began at 0608 GMT.<\/p>\n
Services for the digital bank Revolut, including withdrawals from ATMs, bank transfers and bank card top-ups, were disrupted, which a source close to the matter attributed to the Google Cloud failures.<\/p>\n
UK lenders Lloyds and HSBC confirmed that customers faced issues with their banking services.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We understand the root issues have been resolved, so we expect all our services to be back to normal soon,” Lloyds said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
Internet service tracker Downdetector indicated that hundreds of reports had been made of problems affecting business in the UK, including the property website Rightmove, delivery service DPD and the Royal Mail postal service.<\/p>\n
HSBC said its customers experienced “difficulties accessing our services”, adding that it would “monitor the situation, which is also affecting other organisations”.<\/p>\n
A Revolut spokesperson said the bank was “working to fix the issue since it was identified” and offered its apologies “to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused”.<\/p>\n
Multiple Revolut services in Singapore were also affected, including card payments, ATM withdrawals and currency exchange.\u00a0<\/p>\n
CNA\u2019s checks at 6.30pm found that all 27 listed services on Revolut\u2019s system status page were partially unavailable. The issues were first detected at about 3.50pm, according to the page.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The affected services remained partially unavailable at around 10.50pm.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In response to CNA’s queries, a Revolut spokesperson confirmed that multiple services were affected by a service disruption and the company had been working to fix the issue since it was identified on Tuesday morning, UK time.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We can confirm that all our customers\u2019 money and data are safe,” they added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The company separately indicated, on background, that the disruption was linked to an outage at a third-party provider and was not limited to Revolut.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
