A Stomper feels that migrant workers should be given transport concession cards, following the recent increase in public transport fares.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Stomper Sweetie <\/b><\/span>said many of these workers already face long and tiring commutes, often having to take multiple buses or trains and walk long distances between their dormitories and workplaces.<\/p>\n

“Some domitories don’t even have bus services on weekends and public holidays,” said the Stomper, who added that these workers earn modest wages and perform “dirty, difficult and dangerous” jobs under tough conditions.<\/p>\n

Sweetie also noted that some dormitory operators charge over $550 a month for a shared bed space with communal kitchens and bathrooms.<\/p>\n

“Many workers end up eating simple meals of rice and curry because food at the canteens are expensive,” she added.<\/p>\n

Sweetie further pointed out that migrant workers face discomfort due to the country’s hot climate, as metal fans are prohibited in dormitories for safety reasons.<\/p>\n

“With rising costs everywhere, it is not easy to work in Singapore,” she told Stomp. “Public transport is not cheap, especially for those without concession cards.”<\/p>\n

Sweetie added that when a migrant worker’s fare card runs out of balance, it can cause them to miss their transport to work as there are often no ATMs nearby to top up their cards.<\/p>\n

The Stomper hopes the authorities will consider introducing transport concession cards for migrant workers living in remote areas to “lessen their burden and improve their daily lives.”<\/p>\n
