SINGAPORE \u2013 A 77-year-old pedestrian died after she was hit by a minibus on the PIE on Oct 16.<\/p>\n
In a media reply, the police said they were alerted at 7.10am that day to a hit-and-run accident involving a minibus and a pedestrian on the PIE towards Changi Airport.<\/p>\n
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by a Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedic.<\/p>\n
The minibus driver, 66, had left the scene before the police arrived. He was subsequently arrested for driving without due care and attention causing death.<\/p>\n
Police investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n
A video uploaded on social media shows a lane on the PIE blocked off with traffic cones. Multiple cars, police motorcycles and a tow truck can be seen stopped in that lane.<\/p>\n
Multiple policemen can also be seen surrounding a blue tent.<\/p>\n
The number of road traffic accidents and casualties in the first half of 2026 continued to show an upward trend over the past three years<\/span><\/a>, said the Traffic Police (TP) on Aug 28.<\/p>\n The number of traffic accidents resulting in injuries increased from\u00a03,748\u00a0in the first half of 2025 to 3,869 in 2026.<\/p>\n Injuries rose from\u00a04,894\u00a0in the first half of 2025 to 5,090 during the same period in 2026.<\/p>\n The number of fatalities fell from\u00a079\u00a0in the first half of 2025 to 61 in the first half of 2026, and the number of fatal accidents dropped from 78 to 60.<\/p>\n TP said the drop in fatalities was largely due to fewer deaths among motorcyclists and pillion riders.<\/p>\n Accidents involving elderly pedestrians increased from 121 in the first six months of 2025 to 144 cases over the same period in 2026.<\/p>\n The number of injured elderly pedestrians went up from 106 to 132 in the same period.<\/p>\n Of the reported cases in 2026, 38.9 per cent involved\u00a0elderly pedestrians who engaged in unsafe behaviour<\/span><\/a>, such as jaywalking and crossing outside designated pedestrian crossings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n SINGAPORE \u2013 A 77-year-old pedestrian died after she was hit by a minibus on the PIE on Oct 16.
