{"id":93347,"date":"2026-10-16T08:12:00","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T00:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=93347"},"modified":"2026-10-16T08:12:00","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T00:12:00","slug":"haze-in-singapore-psi-reading-in-central-region-in-very-unhealthy-range","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=93347","title":{"rendered":"Haze in Singapore: PSI reading in central region in \u2018very unhealthy\u2019 range"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"text-primary article-summary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 The hazy conditions persisted <!-- -->as<!-- --> the PSI reading in the <!-- -->central region<!-- --> entered the \u201cvery unhealthy\u201d range <!-- -->at <!-- -->midnight, while the hourly PM2.5 readings remained in the \u201celevated\u201d band <!-- -->islandwide<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At 7am on Oct 16, the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) in the central region stood at 224, hitting a new high <!-- -->for <!-- -->this haze season. The rest of the island <!-- -->recorded <!-- -->PSI readings in the unhealthy band at <!-- -->that time, ranging from 145 to 195.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Air quality is considered unhealthy when the PSI \u2013 a 24-hour rolling average of six key air pollutants \u2013 is in the range of 101 to 200 and very unhealthy when it is in the range of 201 to 300.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The hourly PM2.5 readings \u2013 measured in micrograms per cubic metre and used as a gauge for current air quality \u2013 <b><i>were all in the elevated band at 7am, ranging from 93 to 149.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM2.5 scores from 0 to 55 represent normal values, those between 56 and 150 indicate an elevated concentration of fine particles, while readings between 151 and 250 are considered high and scores above 251 are classified as very high.<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base st_visuals st_visuals-embed\" title=\"st_visuals embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2026\/08\/singapore-haze-widget\/index.html\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share;\" loading=\"eager\" data-testid=\"responsiveIframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The highest PM2.5 reading this haze season was recorded at 3pm on Oct 14 in the western part of the island at 288.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In its daily haze advisory on the evening of Oct 15, the National Environment Agency (NEA) f<!-- -->orecast that the 24-hour PSI for Oct 16 would be in the \u201cunhealthy\u201d to \u201clow very unhealthy\u201d range.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">NEA said that dense smoke haze from fires in Kalimantan continued to drift towards Singapore under prevailing south-easterly winds. Smoke haze was also observed over Sumatra.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">NEA said some showers are expected over Singapore and the surrounding region on Oct 16, but southern Sumatra and parts of Kalimantan are likely to remain dry. With the winds forecast to be east-south-easterly or south-easterly, smoke haze is likely to continue to be carried from Kalimantan towards Singapore, it added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-primary font-tertiary-body-baseline-regular\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Over the weekend, more showers are forecast over Singapore and parts of Kalimantan. Winds are expected to shift to blow from the south-east or south, which could reduce the transport of smoke haze from Kalimantan to Singapore.
