It’s been six long years, but we finally have the HomePod mini 2, Apple’s long-awaited update to its compact wireless smart home speaker.

The first thing you need to know is that it comes in new colours. Midnight, White, and Blue make a return, and joining them this time are Pink and Green. Dimensions are unchanged, which means it’s roughly the size of a swollen tennis ball.

Speaking of colours, it gets a new feature called Sound Glow, which basically means the colour panel on the top of the speaker will change colours to match the album artwork or type of music you were playing. If you are playing background sounds like rain, the panel will glow blue. It’s a subtle, but nice touch.

As usual, you can use a HomePod mini alone, or use them in a stereo pair with your Mac or Apple TV 4K. New this year is the ability to pair up to four HomePods – either four HomePod mini 2s or two HomePod 2 and two HomePod mini 2s – to create a surround sound setup. I got the chance to experience this, and the difference between a two- and four-speaker setup is stark.

You can use a pair of HomePod mini 2 speakers as rear speakers in a surround sound setup with the new Apple TV 4K.

Photo: HWZ

Finally, support for Siri AI is also planned for the HomePod mini 2, but that will come in a software update later.
