Malaysia Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan on Oct 12 said the country will raise the issue of transboundary haze when foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations meet next month in Manila, to discuss more effective regional mechanisms to tackle the problem, Bernama news agency reported.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Singapore\u00a0Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said last week that she had been in touch with her Indonesian counterpart Jumhur Hidayat, adding that Singapore is prepared to help Indonesia<\/a> in fighting forest fires wherever necessary amid the ongoing haze.<\/p>\n Prabowo on Monday also directed that firefighting in Central Kalimantan\u2019s Tanjung Puting National Park, a stronghold for orangutans and other wildlife<\/a>, be prioritised. Tanjung Puting is the world\u2019s largest conservation and rehabilitation centre for orangutans.<\/p>\n Conditions in four provinces \u2013 Riau, West Kalimantan, Jambi and South Kalimantan \u2013 are showing signs of improvement, Teddy said.<\/p>\n Between Aug 18 and Sep 21, Indonesia’s health ministry recorded close to 175,000\u00a0cases of acute respiratory infections in areas affected by forest and land fires. Of these, over 40,000 cases involved children under the age of five.\u00a0<\/p>\n The ministry said last month it was strengthening health posts and hospitals to serve people experiencing health problems posed by the land and forest fires.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Indonesia\u2019s transportation ministry said on Monday that close to 1,700 scheduled domestic flights were affected by forest fires between Aug 11 and Oct 9.\u00a0<\/p>\n Of the 1,673 domestic flights, director-general of civil aviation Lukman F Laisa said that 745 flights were delayed while 907 flights were either cancelled or postponed.
